Gaby Lewis has successfully managed to carry forward her family’s legacy in the sport of cricket. She is the brightest and one of the most promising prospects in Ireland cricket. She became the youngest player at the age of 13 years and 166 days for Ireland to make her international debut in a T20I on 9th September 2014 against South Africa in the 2nd T20I in Moseley Cricket Club, Solihull.
Lewis made her ODI debut on 5th August 2016, at the age of 15 years and 131 days against South Africa in the 1st ODI at Merrion Cricket Club Ground, Dublin. The Ireland women’s team are currently involved in their maiden bilateral series against India, led by the stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana, in India.
The series includes a three-match ODI series from 10th January 2025 (Friday) to 15th January 2025 (Wednesday) at the Niranjan Shah Stadium, in Rajkot. The 1st ODI of the historic three-match series also marked a landmark occasion for the young 23-year-old Ireland skipper Gaby Lewis making her 50th appearance in the format for Ireland.
Skipper Gaby Lewis has scored 1,412 runs at a strike rate of 68.21 and an impressive average of 32.09 in 49 innings in the ODI format so far. She was appointed as the full-time skipper for Ireland on 15th October 2024. She became the youngest player for Ireland, at the age of 21 years and 76 days to make her captaincy debut in the ODI format.
Lewis led Ireland for the first time in the format on 11th June 2022 in the 1st ODI against South Africa at Castle Avenue, Dublin. Her side ended up on the losing side by 9 wickets against the Proteas on her captaincy debut for her side in the format.
Her tally of runs includes 11 half-centuries and her best performance with the bat for her side in the format came on 9th October 2021 against Zimbabwe in the 3rd ODI, when she scored an unbeaten 96* (129 balls) at the Harare Sports Club. She was also awarded the Player of the Match for her sensational innings with the bat for her side.
Her landmark innings in the format came to an end in the 44th over of the innings, when a slightly exhausted Gaby Lewis chipped one back to Deepti Sharma, departing for 92 off 129, falling just 8 runs short of her well-deserved, maiden century in the ODI format for her side. Her innings included 15 boundaries.
Lewis bailed her side out of trouble from 56/4 in the 14th over of the innings, courtesy of a massive 117-run partnership for the 5th wicket, alongside Leah Paul, followed by another crucial 21-run stand for the 6th wicket with the wicket-keeper batter Christina Coulter Reilly taking their side closer to the 200-run mark, before the Ireland skipper made her way back to the pavilion.
Ireland eventually posted a competitive total of 238/7 in their quota of 50 overs in the 1st ODI against India.
