The West Indies women’s team, led by skipper Hayley Matthews, were last involved in a white-ball bilateral series against India, where they suffered defeats in both formats, 2-1 in T20Is and 3-0 in ODIs.
The Hayley Matthews-led side returns to their own shores in their bid to bounce back, they gear themselves to host Bangladesh, led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, for a historic, maiden bilateral series between both these sides.
The series will include a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series from 19th to 31st January 2025. The upcoming ODI series will be counted under the ongoing ICC Women’s Championship cycle. The home side would be keen to grab some crucial points on offer to keep their slimmest of hopes alive for a direct qualification in the upcoming 13th edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup which will be hosted by India in October, later this year.
The home side, West Indies has announced their squad for the upcoming historic white-ball bilateral series against Bangladesh.
West Indies squad for Bangladesh series:
Hayley Matthews (C), Shemaine Campbelle (VC), Aaliyah Alleyne, Nerissa Crafton, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Jannillea Glasgow, Chinelle Henry, Zaida James, Qiana Joseph, Mandy Mangru, Ashmini Munisar, Karishma Ramharack
Notably, Cherry Ann Fraser and Jannillea Glasgow have made their way back into the squad replacing wicket-keeper batter, Rashada Williams and Shamilia Connell. The rest of the unit is the same that travelled to India for the white-ball series, in December last year.
Zaida James was the leading wicket-taker with the ball for West Indies and the 3rd highest wicket-taker of the series with 6 wickets in a couple of innings with the ball for her side in the recently concluded ODI series against India.
Deandra Dottin was the leading wicket-taker for the West Indies and the joint 2nd highest wicket-taker of the series, alongside Titas Sadhu, with four wickets in three innings with the ball for her side in the T20I series against India.
Skipper Hayley Matthews was the leading run-scorer for her side in the ODI series against India with 106 runs in three innings with the bat for her side. She was also the leading run-scorer for her side and the 3rd highest run-scorer of the T20I series against India with 108 runs with a sensational average of 54 in three innings with the bat for her side in the series.
West Indies women’s head coach Shane Dietz noted that the upcoming series against Bangladesh presents them with an ideal opportunity to test the depth of their squad while continuing with their brand of cricket.
He said, “Bangladesh’s visit comes at an ideal time in our preparation cycle. They’re a skilled unit that has shown impressive growth, and this series gives us an excellent opportunity to examine our squad depth and continue to implement our aggressive, flamboyant brand of West Indian cricket.”
The Nigar Sultana Joty-led side announced their squad for the upcoming series, earlier this week. As far as the qualification scenario is concerned for the visitors, Bangladesh, they have a simple equation, to win the ODI series to ensure their direct qualification and avoid the qualifiers route for the upcoming edition of the ODI World Cup in India.
Both these sides have only been up against each other in ICC tournaments, with the Windies emerging as the overwhelming favourites with a flawless, unbeaten record of 5-0 (4 T20Is and 1 ODI) against Bangladesh in the white-ball format so far.
The upcoming series will commence on 19th January 2025 (Sunday) with ODIs and will conclude on 31st January 2025 (Friday) with the T20Is.
