Bangladesh Women squad for West Indies tour announced, starts January 19

The West Indian women’s team led by skipper Hayley Matthews were last involved in a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series against the home side India led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. They suffered a heartbreaking 1-2 defeat in the T20Is and 0-3 in the ODIs.

In their next assignment, the Hayley Matthews-led side will be hosting Bangladesh led by skipper Nigar Sultana Joty for a white-ball series that will include a three-match ODI series followed by a three-match T20I series from 19th to 31st January 2025. It will be the first instance when both these sides will be up against each other in a bilateral series in the ODI as well as the T20I series, marking Bangladesh’s maiden bilateral tour to the Caribbean.

The visitors, Bangladesh have announced their squad for their upcoming historic bilateral white ball series against the West Indies.

Nigar Sultana Joty (C), Nahida Akter, Murshida Khatun, Dilara Akter, Sharmin Akter Supta, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Lata Mondol, Rabeya Khan, Fahima Khatun, Fariha Islam Trisna, Sultana Khatun, Fargana Hoque Pinky, Taj Nehar, Sanjida Akther Maghla, Marufa Akter

Notably, there are only a couple of changes from the squad that last took part in the three-match ODI series against Ireland. Jahanara Alam, who has taken indefinite break from the game to prioritize her well-being, has been replaced by Fariha Islam Trisna and Ritu Moni has been replaced by Lata Mondol in the squad.

Sharmin Akhter, Fargana Hoque, skipper Nigar Sultana Joty, and Nahida Akter are some of the players to watch out for from Bangladesh’s point of view in the upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies.

As far as the head-to-head face-off between both these sides is concerned, they haven’t faced each other in the bilateral series, all five of them (4 T20Is and 1 ODI) have come in the ICC events. The odds are heavily stacked against the visitors Bangladesh as they are yet to defeat West Indies in any white ball format at the international level.

Sharmin Akhter was the leading run-scorer in Bangladesh’s previous ODI series against Ireland with 211 runs at a sensational average of 70.33 in three innings, including a couple of half-centuries in the series. Her best performance in the series came in the 1st ODI when she scored 96 (89 balls) in Mirpur.

Fargana Hoque also had an impressive series with the bat in their previous ODI series against Ireland. She scored 172 runs at an impressive average of 57.33 in three innings with the bat for her side. Her tally of runs included a hattrick of half-centuries in the series, with the best of 61 (99 balls) in the 3rd ODI against Ireland.

Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty was the 3rd highest run-scorer for her side and the 4th highest run-scorer of the ODI series against Ireland. She scored 86 runs at an impressive average of 43 in three innings with the bat for her side in the series against Ireland. Nahida Akter was the 2nd highest wicket-taker of the series and for her side after Sultana Khatun (7 wickets in three innings) in the ODI series against Ireland when she picked up 6 wickets with an impressive average of 18.33 and an economy of 3.79 in three innings for her side.

The upcoming ODI series is crucial for the Nigar Sultana Joty-led Bangladesh as they need to win the series to ensure their direct qualification for the upcoming edition of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup which will be hosted by India in October, later this year.
