Afy Fletcher’s Gladiators won over the Revellers by 3 runs in what was a thrilling match at Trinidad and Tobago. After posing 66 runs in 10 overs, the Gladiators successfully defended their total, avenging their former 8-wicket defeat to the Revellers.
It was the second Women’s T10 match which was scheduled just ahead of the Caribbean Premier League final at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. Named as the CPL Women’s T10 Courts Invitational, it saw teams NLCB Revellers and Courts Gladiators battle it out for a 10-overs per side match.
The Gladiators batted first and scored a total of 66 runs losing 6 wickets in their allotted 10 overs. Batters Kycia Knight and Hayley Matthews gave the Gladiators a promising start at the top of the order. Put to open, they put a formidable 41-run partnership for the first wicket. While Matthews scored 26 from 23 balls, Kycia got 15 of 13 before they both fell in successive balls. It was Stacy-Ann King’s bowling which had got the Revellers back in the game. King got her 3rd wicket soon as Sheneta Grimmond fell to Felicia Walters’ catch for 2 runs. Kyshona Knight and Qiana Joseph then took the innings forward. But Knight was bowled out on 7 and Joseph hit a six before falling to Anisa Mohammed.
Gladiators ended their innings on 66 for 6 at the end of the 10 overs.
In reply, the Revellers couldn’t start their innings as they would have wanted. Tight bowling by Shakera Selman didn’t let them score freely. NLCB Revellers missed their usual captain and smashing batter Stafanie Taylor sorely in the match as wickets kept on falling cheaply.
Being captained by Anisa Mohammed, Revellers came close to the total but couldn’t reach the target score. Matthews and Shabika Gajnabi took out both the openers Jodian Morgan and Britney Cooper in successive deliveries and Revellers were left with 7 runs for 2 wickets. Natasha McLean then hit 2 fours before falling to Knight at 14. Soon Gladiators captain Fletcher bowled Chedean Nation and it appeared that the game was slipping away from the Revellers. It was then Chinelle Henry and King who gave their side hopes of winning. Together they added 22 runs in 12 balls before King was run-out. Anisa’s Revellers could only score 63 runs in 10 overs, handing a 3-run victory to Fletcher’s Gladiators.
Henry remained unbeaten on 17 while King added 11 runs to add to her tally of 3 wickets in the first innings.
