England’s 21-year-old young opening batter Grace Scrivens will replace Alice Capsey at the Melbourne Renegades for the remainder of the ongoing 10th edition of the Women’s Hundred. Capsey will depart for South Africa to join England’s T20I squad for their upcoming bilateral series commencing on 24th November 2024.
The Melbourne Renegades are without their regular skipper Sophie Molineux as she was ruled out midway through the tournament due to a sore knee. The young 20-year-old all-rounder Charis Bekker was named as her local replacement for the rest of the tournament and Hayley Matthews stepped up as the skipper in her absence.
The 20-year-old young all-rounder Alice Capsey was initially left out of England’s T20I squad for their upcoming all-format tour of South Africa. However, a few injuries minor concerns in the England camp, has earned her a recall in the T20I squad. She represented the Melbourne Renegades in the ongoing 10th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) after starting off her WBBL career with the Melbourne Stars.
Alice Capsey has scored 72 runs at an impressive strike rate of 135.84 in 8 innings with the bat for her side. Apart from her contributions with the bat, she has been one of the stand-out performers with the ball, as she is the leading wicket-taker for the Renegades and overall, the 3rd highest wicket-taker in the ongoing edition of the tournament with 13 wickets to her name at an impressive average of 13.23 with an economy of 7.21 in 8 innings. Her tally of wickets also includes one five-wicket haul against the Perth Scorchers on 7th November 2024.
Owing to her international commitments, she won’t be available for the business end of the competition. Soon, she will be joining her teammates in South Africa for their upcoming series against the Proteas Women from 24th November 2024.
Melbourne Renegades are currently placed 2nd on the points table with 10 points from 8 games with just 2 games left in their campaign in the league stages and are a premier contender to book their spot in the knockout stages of the tournament. For these crucial games ahead, England’s former Under-19 skipper Grace Scrivens will be joining the squad. She has been making big waves in her journey as a cricketer, ever since leading England to the final in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup 2023, in South Africa.
Fresh off a breakthrough domestic season, where she led the Sunrisers to their maiden championship, this maiden WBBL gig is a fitting reward for her outstanding season. Grace led from the front, leading the scoring for her side and finished as the 2nd highest run-scorer in the 2024 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, 50-over competition, with 553 runs at a strike rate of 71.07 and a sensational average of 50.27 in 15 innings. Her tally of runs included four half-centuries and a century and also added 4 wickets to the tally.
“We’re excited to welcome Grace into the group ahead of a huge period for us as we aim to secure our place in this year’s finals series. Her recent success in The Hundred and her aggressive game style make her a valuable addition to the squad,” commented Melbourne Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarton, about Grace Scrivens’s addition to the squad for the rest of the season.
Grace enjoyed success even in the shortest format, the Charlotte Edwards Cup, 20-over competition, amassing 244 runs, at a strike rate of 108.44, from 10 outings. She can also be more than handy with the ball, is safe in the outfield, establishing herself as a complete package.
The Renegades will be up against the Hobart Hurricanes in the next game of their campaign on 21st November 2024 at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart.
