“Mentally we were all tired, but…,” Eden Carson reflects on subsequent India series following T20 World Cup

Eden Carson, who marked her international debut against South Africa at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, has become a rising star in New Zealand’s bowling lineup.

New Zealand is currently on tour in India for a three-match ODI series, part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25. Carson has shown consistent form, claiming a total of four wickets in the two ODIs played so far. The team experienced a setback in the first match, losing by 59 runs, but came back strong with a convincing 76-run win in the second.

Discussing her experience in India, Carson commented, “Coming over to India where conditions usually suit spinners has really helped as well. I’ve been able to back up performances, both in the field and bowling.”

She proved to be invaluable during the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the United Arab Emirates, where her standout performances were crucial to her team’s success. She took nine wickets for 147 runs, recording an average of 16.33 and maintaining an economy rate of 6.39.

For Carson, this milestone was all the more meaningful after her journey to earn a full-time spot on the team. Reflecting on the tournament’s impact, Carson said, “It gave me a bit of a confidence boost, also (after) being in and out of the squad over the last year as well, depending on conditions.”

The White Ferns faced a tight schedule following the World Cup, with minimal recovery time before switching to ODI play. Their fatigue showed in the initial game, but the team rebounded with renewed energy for the second. “Mentally we were all tired, but I think being able to push and support each other has been really good,” Carson shared, highlighting the team’s resilience.

The shift from T20 to ODIs required a quick adjustment for Carson. She admitted the transition caught her off guard initially: “It was a bit of a shock to the system. In the first game I kinda still had my T20 cap on.”

Eager to cap off their six-week journey abroad on a high note, New Zealand is determined to claim victory in the final match. “Definitely hungry. It would really top off the last six weeks we have had, coming off the World Cup win and then being able to finish off a series win against India in India would be really good,” Carson remarked, emphasizing the importance of a strong finish.

Following their return from India, the White Ferns are looking forward to celebrating their recent accomplishments with their supporters at home. Reflecting on the World Cup journey, Carson said, “Going into the [World Cup] tournament I don’t think a lot of people really saw us winning or even getting out of the group phase, so to be able to do that for New Zealand, our family and friends has really meant a lot and something I am really proud of.”

In her career so far, Carson has played 42 international matches, including 11 ODIs and 31 T20Is, amassing a total of 49 wickets (10 in ODIs and 39 in T20Is). After their tour to India, the White Ferns will head for their next challenge, a three-match ODI series against Australia, which will kick off in Wellington on December 19.
