Amy Edgar secures two-year extension with Perth Scorchers

Amy Louise Edgar, a 26-year-old Australian cricketer, has been making waves in the domestic circuit with her remarkable progress. Edgar’s breakout performance came during the ninth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where she showcased her talents with the Perth Scorchers. Her outstanding contributions earned her a two-year contract extension with the Scorchers, securing her place in the squad until WBBL|11.

Beyond her exploits with the Scorchers, Edgar has been a key player for Western Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL). In the most recent season, she claimed 17 wickets in just 12 matches, with the best of 4 for 38 against South Australia.

Initially recognized as a specialist batter, Edgar has successfully transitioned into a right-arm off-spinner, adding a new dimension to her game. Known for her powerful ball-striking and ability to score quickly, she has played several match-winning innings from the middle order for both Perth and Western Australia. Her consistent performances earned her a spot in the Team of the Tournament for 2023 alongside star players like White Ferns skipper Sophie Devine, Australian batting stalwart Beth Mooney, and rising star Chloe Ainsworth.

In WBBL|09, Edgar was a force to be reckoned with, taking 20 wickets from 15 matches at an impressive average of 16.10, while maintaining an economical rate of 6.75. Additionally, she contributed 91 runs, showcasing her all-round abilities. Her career in the WBBL has been steadily improving since her debut in 2019. With 24 wickets in 20 innings and a best of 4 for 19 against the Sydney Sixers, Edgar has become core part of one of the league’s most effective spin-bowling attacks, forming a formidable trio with Alana King and Lilly Mills.

Reflecting on her journey, Edgar expressed her excitement about continuing with the Scorchers: “I’m very excited to be sticking around for the next two years. I have absolutely loved my time with the Club so far, and I can’t imagine playing anywhere else. As a team, we’ve been really settled over the past few years, and I think that gives us a great platform to build trust within the group, which will hopefully lead to plenty of wins for us this summer.”

Looking ahead to WBBL|10, Edgar is determined to build on her form and help her team succeed: “To be able to perform consistently last season, particularly with the ball, was really pleasing, and I hope I can build on that form heading into WBBL|10. We were disappointed with how we finished last year, but the group is really motivated to get better both individually and as a collective, and hopefully bring home another WBBL title.”

The Perth Scorchers have a few spots left to fill before their highly anticipated season opener against the Melbourne Stars at the WACA Ground on Sunday, 27 October. With a solid core already in place, including local talents and international stars like Sophie Devine, the Scorchers are gearing up for another exciting campaign.
