The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) has made a significant announcement regarding the leadership of its women’s team, appointing Mick Delaney as the new head coach. Delaney, a former cricketer who previously played three seasons with South Australia, brings a wealth of coaching experience to the role.
Having transitioned into coaching after his playing days, Delaney spent over five years with Cricket Australian Capital Territory (ACT), where he held various roles in talent pathways and coach development, as well as serving as the elite teams lead. His return to SACA earlier this year as the head of female cricket development and pathways paved the way for his elevation to the head coach position.
Delaney expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, emphasizing the talent and potential within the South Australian Women’s Team. “This is an incredible opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said. He highlighted the team’s readiness for success and expressed confidence in the group’s ability to achieve their goals.
Acknowledging the groundwork laid by his predecessor, Luke Williams, Delaney extended his gratitude for Williams’ support and the progress made under his leadership. He expressed excitement about the upcoming preseason training, which is set to commence on Monday, 17 June.
Luke Williams’ tenure as head coach of the South Australian women’s cricket team was marked by a clear commitment to player development and a drive for on-field success. His impact there is undeniable, twice in just four years, he guided the South Australian Scorpions to the finals of the prestigious Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL), showcasing the team’s growth under his guidance.
Several players from the South Australian W omen’s Team have taken opportunities to continue playing cricket during the northern hemisphere summer. However, the entire squad is expected to come together in the coming months to prepare for the upcoming season.
The appointment of Mick Delaney marks a new chapter for the South Australian Women’s Team, with expectations high for continued growth and success under his guidance. With Delaney’s experience in player development and his passion for the game, SACA is confident in his ability to lead the team to new heights and achieve their targets.
