It was a battle of skippers Laura Wolvaardt from South Africa, Chamari Athapaththu from Sri Lanka, and Hayley Matthews from the West Indies were nominated as the power-packed nominees for the Player of the Month for April 2024.

However, the 26-year-old all-rounder and the West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews has edged the battle of skippers to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award for April 2024.

“I’m really happy to win the award again. The performances resulted in the team’s success and that’s the most important thing for me as captain. To win in Pakistan was always a big goal. I wanted to perform well and contribute to the team’s success so to be able to have performances and get the results that was really good and showed that the hard work and the concentration in Pakistan paid off.” The West Indies skipper Hayley Matthews expresses her delight after winning the Player of the Month award for April 2024.

Hayley Matthews had an exceptional outing with the bat in the recently concluded white ball series against Pakistan. She scored 451 runs at a humongous average of 90.2 in six innings. Her tally of runs includes a couple of half-centuries in the T20I format and a couple of centuries in the ODI format.

Her best performance with the bat came on the 23rd of April 2024 when she scored 141 runs at a strike rate of 94.63 against Pakistan. She was named the Player of the Series in the ODI format for scoring 325 runs with the bat and picking up six wickets with the ball. She was also named the Player of the Series in the T20I format, for scoring 205 runs with the bat and picking up seven wickets with the ball in the series.

She has seven Player of the Match awards in her kitty out of the last eight T20I matches for the West Indies. It is also her third ICC Women’s Player of the Month Award after achieving it earlier a couple of times in November 2021 and October 2023.
