The rise of Pakistan’s opening star – Sidra Ameen

Opening batter, Sidra Amin made her international debut 12 years back, in 2011 against Ireland in the Women’s T20I Triangular series, Amin endured quite a rough start to her shortest format career, with her 1st fifty coming in after a long 5 years gap (12 innings). She didn’t get a proper rope in the T20I’s, with Amin featuring in just a few games here and there.

Her numbers in the 50 overs format were also quite similar, having to wait 5 years for her maiden fifty. Once she scored her maiden fifty, her individual scores also started to improve, she started scoring runs upwards of 30 quite consistently.

Since the start of 2022, Sidra has played 16 games, amassing a whopping 737 runs, at an incredible average of 52.64 and a strike rate of 75.35. Sidra in her 12 years long career has 3 centuries to her name, all coming after the start of 2022.

In the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa in Pakistan, Sidra was her country’s top scorer and overall the 3rd highest run scorer of the series. She scored a total of 133 runs at an average of 44.33 and a strike rate of 116.66. Her consistent knack for scoring runs in the ODIs has meant that she gets the deserved chances in the shortest format off late, and as things stand, she has taken it with both hands.

“I used to get selected in the T20I squads, but I could not make the most of those chances in the past. I have been a regular part of the ODI Squad and I used it to build my momentum for the T20Is. I think, I am still learning and there is still room for improvement. For now, I just want to give the best possible start to my team, no matter what the format is,” said Sidra Amin to The New Indian Express.

Pakistan has just played 17 international matches in the last 8 years, but now things are going to change, with South Africa playing a 3-match ODI series, which is commencing on 8th September. After the series, Pakistan is set to host Sri Lanka and Ireland for the limited-overs series.

When asked about teams coming to play Pakistan in the upcoming tours she said, “We used to have one match here or there on the home soil in the past. Kudos to PCB and other boards who are making these back-to-back series possible. We are known for our Mehmannawazi. When the players from other countries come here to play, they talk about our hospitality.”

Sidra Amin is definitely going to be a threat to the opposition in the upcoming series, her stats when playing in Pakistan since the start of 2022 are genuinely out of this world, scoring 495 runs from 6 innings at an average of 123.75 and a strike rate of 88.55. Her scores included 3 90+ scores, including 2 centuries.
