Ecclestone’s ascent to the pinnacle of women’s cricket began in 2016 when she was selected for the England Academy winter squad at the tender age of 16. During a tour of Sri Lanka, she displayed immense potential, taking 16 wickets in a tri-series against Australia A and Sri Lanka A, including a remarkable four-wicket haul against Sri Lanka A in Panagoda. Her performances caught the attention of selectors and paved the way for her international debut.

On 3 July 2016, at just 17 years old, Ecclestone made her Women’s T20I debut against Pakistan during their tour of England. Her impressive performances led to her inclusion in the England women’s One Day International squad for their tour to the West Indies in September 2016. However, as the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup approached, Ecclestone had to forgo the opportunity to represent her country due to her age and school commitments.

Ecclestone’s career gained momentum following her school exams, and she earned her Test debut against Australia in the Women’s Ashes series in November 2017. Her ability to generate extra bounce from her towering height of 6 feet, coupled with excellent control, made her an asset across all three formats of the game. In October 2018, she was named in England’s squad for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 tournament, where she was regarded as one of the players to watch.

In February 2019, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) awarded Ecclestone a full central contract, underscoring her value to the national team. Her 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup selection further solidified her reputation as a key player. She reached significant milestones during the tournament, taking her 50th wicket in WT20Is and 100th international wicket, becoming the youngest woman to achieve the former feat in just 34 matches. Ecclestone’s exceptional performance in the tournament, with eight wickets at an average of 6.12, earned her the title of the world’s number-one WT20I bowler.

Ecclestone’s success continued unabated, as she remained an integral part of the England squad. In February 2021, during England’s tour of New Zealand, she celebrated her 100th international wicket, further cementing her status as a top-tier spinner. Her consistent performances led to her inclusion in the Test squad for the one-off match against India in June 2021.

The year 2022 proved to be a defining one for Ecclestone. She was part of England’s Women’s Ashes squad and played a pivotal role in their victory against Australia. In the World Cup, she scalped a total of 21 wickets, falling just two short of the all-time record for ODI World Cup tournaments. Notably, in the semi-final match against South Africa, Ecclestone achieved a remarkable milestone by taking her first five-wicket haul in WODIs, finishing with figures of 6/36.

Ecclestone’s exceptional form and unwavering dedication led to her selection for the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. Even beyond the Ashes and World Cup, Ecclestone’s brilliance shines through. In the ongoing 2023 Ashes series, she showcased her prowess by claiming ten wickets in the test match against Australia, proving her ability to perform consistently at the highest level.
