The Rise of Female Cricket Popularity: the three reasons behind this

Women’s cricket is getting bigger and bigger every year with the astonishing performances of female cricket teams and the high-quality games they are continuously playing. And even though for some people, female cricket has just arrived on the scene, the truth is that cricket has been around for too many years for women.

What is fascinating is that female cricket gets to have more and more fans and in fact more and more male fans, besides the more obvious female followers!   You can sense that from a number of aspects including the growing popularity of female cricket leagues, the increasing broadcast of female cricket games, and the expanding list of markets in
cricket betting apps and websites.

Why is it, however, that a sport that has been here for such a long time, is only starting to spike in popularity? Here are the three basic reasons behind it.

The first and most important reason is that cricket is indeed an inherently interesting sport. It is a sport that gathers the eyes of millions and millions of people all across the world and this, itself, is a pretty clear explanation for its popularity in the first place.

Played by women makes it even more interesting and fascinating, particularly as they are showcasing incredible skills and styles in batting and bowling. Women are picking up lately in many different sports and they are finally getting all the attention that they deserve. Women are thriving in football – think of Chelsea FC Women for example, in basketball, in tennis, in volleyball, and in cricket!

It is no more the prerogative or better the privilege of males to be the absolute masters in cricket – women get to do it and they are doing it great. This explains why national female cricket teams are becoming so big as well. Take, for example, India, Australia, England, and South Africa, all of which are writing their own history in the sport.

And of course, these teams are shining in what has emerged as the widely popular female cricket leagues, including the Women’s Big Bash League, the Women’s T20 Challenge, the Women’s Caribbean Premier League, and the Women’s Super Smash among others.

Upgrading female cricket to a level where high-profile leagues are taking place, just like the traditional male cricket leagues, has been an important step towards making women’s games more attractive and interesting to fans.

The second reason behind the growth of female cricket’s popularity is the promotion made by the governments and corporate sponsors themselves. Lately, we are witnessing growing investments being dedicated to the communication, broadcast, promotion, and marketing of female cricket or even the marketing through female cricket teams.

Traditional cricket countries’ governments are investing enormous amounts in developing the infrastructure and framework for female cricket to blossom and this is leveraged by huge, global sponsors and brands, such as KIA Motors, who are showing persistent interest in promoting the women’s cricket national teams.

The third reason has to do with betting and more specifically with the fact that bookmakers and sports betting sites are not only embracing female cricket leagues, but they are continuously developing more and more options and markets which on the one hand satisfy the needs of the most demanding punters, and on the other hand, they effortlessly contribute to the promotion and growth of women’s cricket followership and fans!
