Deepti Sharma creates history, becomes first Indian to Pick 100 T20I Wickets

India with successive wins against arch-rivals Pakistan and the West Indies got their Twenty20 (T20) World Cup campaign off to a flying start. Indian all-rounder, Deepti Sharma impacted a big way in India’s wins over the West Indies and in the process scripted her name into the books of records.

Indian all-rounder, Deepti Sharma didn’t have the best of starts to her World Cup campaign with figures of 1/39 (4) against Pakistan but bounced back against the West Indies with figures of 3/15 (4) and with the wickets of the two set batters, Shemaine Campbelle and Stafanie Taylor Deepti edge past teammate, Poonam Yadav’s record of the most Twenty20 International (T20I) wickets of 98.

Deepti Sharma bagged a 3rd in Afy Fletcher handing her a golden duck to register her 100th T20I wicket. With 100 T20I wickets to her name, Deepti Sharma now leads India’s wickets column in the shortest format across both men’s and women’s cricket.

The 25-year-old all-rounder now seeds at the top of India’s wicket-takers columns with 100 to her off 89 innings with the best of 4/10, an average of 19.07, an economy rate of 6.09, and a strike rate of 18.7. Veteran spinner, Poonam Yadav, only played a game in 2022 and 4 in 2021 and is stranded at her 98 wickets mark off 72 innings. Poonam’s got the best figures of 4/9, an average of 15.25, an economy rate of 5.75, and a strike rate of 15.9.

Male cricketers, Yuzvendra Chahal with 91 wickets off 75 matches, Bhuvneshwar Kumar with 90 wickets off 87 wickets, and Ravichandran Ashwin with 72 wickets off 65 innings follow next on the list that Deepti and Poonam lead as India’s leading wicket-takers in the shortest format.

Deepti Sharma is one of India’s most improved cricketers in recent times and her numbers do all the talking. In 2022, Deepti in 25 innings has bagged 29 wickets and with the bat scored 370 runs in 19 innings, importantly at an average of 37.00 and a strike rate of 136.02. In the year till date, Deepti in 6 innings bagged 13 wickets and in 2 innings with the bat scored 49 runs.

Deepti Sharma’s run for India will remain crucial both with the bat and ball in India’s forthcoming games against England on the 18th of February and Ireland on the 20th in the ongoing T20 World Cup in South Africa.
