West Indies Women Announced 18 member Squad for South Africa tour

West Indies has named its 18 members squad for the four-match ODI series in South Africa and with that also announced the comeback of leg spinner Afy Fletcher.

Afy Fletcher is returning from a year-long maternity leave last played for West Indies in a T20 against England in September 2020. She played her debut match in 2008 and gave a brilliant performance. She took 4 wickets to help her team win against Ireland. Since then she has taken 61 wickets in 54 ODIs and 43 wickets in 50 T20Is. She will play a major role in the team with the spin as their key spinner Qiana Joseph is injured.

Other than the return of their experienced player in Afy Fletcher, they have also added 3 uncapped players to their team. left-arm spinner Kaysia Schultz, right-arm pacer Jannillea Glasgow, and batter Mandy Mangru are new additions to the team. They were selected after looking at their performances in the series between West Indies-A and Pakistan-A.

These matches will be important for West Indies with the upcoming world cup in hindsight. They would want performances both from their experienced and new players.

This is what Ann Browne-John, the women’s lead selector, said in the official statement announcing the squad on Windiescricket.com. “The return of the experienced Afy Fletcher brings added variety to the bowling particularly with the absence of Qiana Joseph who has been ruled out due to injury, In our drive to continue the expansion of our player pool, the panel has included three young, uncapped players. Exposure to international cricket at this time will most certainly give them the experience and match time needed to develop and grow their individual talents.”
