Hayley Matthews completed her 2500 runs in the T20I format, achieving the milestone in the second T20I against India, and became the third Windies batter to accomplish this feat.
Windies skipper Matthews achieved yet another milestone in her young career as she is the third Windies batter with over 2500 runs in the T20I format.
West Indies is on a tour to India for a limited-over series with three T20Is and as many ODIs. The Windies were trailing 1-0 going into the second T20I at the DY Patil stadium. After being put into bat first, India put up a total of 159 on the board.
Chasing 160, Hayley Matthews led the charge for the visitors. She was 43 runs shy of completing 2500 runs. Matthews not only accomplished the record but went on to score an unbeaten 85 off 47 balls guiding the visitors to a comprehensive victory. It was also her first fifty against India and also received the Player of the Match for her standout performances both with bat and ball which was also her 17th player of the match, the second most by a Windies player.
Following this, Matthews is the only the second Windies cricketer after Stafanie Taylor to amass over 2500 runs and scalp 100 wickets in the T20I format. It was in September 2014, a 17-year-old Hayley Matthews made her T20I debut against New Zealand. The all-rounder from Barbados started to show glimpses of her all-round brilliance early in her career as she received her first Player of the Match award in May 2015 in a bilateral T20I series during the third T20I, claiming four wickets with the ball and scoring an unbeaten 32 runs.
Matthews was part of the Windies squad in the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup and her first T20I fifty came in a highly intense match against Australia in the World Cup final. Matthews scored 66 off 45 balls helping her side chase a total of 149 as Windies went on to win their maiden World Cup in the format and received the Player of the Match for her blistering knock, while also claiming a wicket in the same match.
In May 2019, Matthews scored her first T20I century after scoring an unbeaten 107 against Ireland. A year later, the right-handed batter went on to complete 1000 runs in the T20I format, which came during the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Matthews was the standout performer for the West Indies in the 2023 T20 World Cup as she amassed over 130 runs in four matches and was the leading run-scorer in the tournament. In the same year, she continued to soar in her dazzling form as she recorded her highest T20I score which came during the Windies’ tour to Australia, scoring 132 against Australia and in the same T20I series, she completed 2000 runs in the T20I format, showcasing her remarkable consistency with the bat.
The Windies skipper has enjoyed a sensational year in 2024 as she completed her 100 T20I matches, and 100 wickets in T20Is, and is now followed by amassing over 2500 runs in the format.
With over 2500 runs, including 14 fifties and two centuries, Matthews continues to be a vital prospect of the West Indies batting lineup.
