The former legendary Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami joins the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) with the Trinbago Knight Riders. She is all set to be a mentor for the franchise in the upcoming 3rd edition of the WCPL.

The Inaugural edition of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League was played in the year 2022. The Trinbago Knight Riders were crowned as the inaugural champions of the tournament. They defeated Barbados Royals led by skipper Hayley Matthews in the final. The Hayley Matthews-led side went on to be the champions of the 2nd edition of the tournament defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final.

“I think WCPL brings a lot of value to women’s cricket, particularly in the Caribbean. Those who are not playing in other competitions, I know a few players, they played a different professional league in different parts of the world, but there’s plenty of quality cricketers, they’re not getting that kind of opportunity.” Jhulan Goswami speaks about the opportunity the WCPL provides for local domestic talent from the Caribbean to express themselves.

The former legendary Women in Blue pacer Jhulan Goswami had a decent record in the T20I format. She picked up 56 wickets in 67 innings with the ball, since making her debut in the format on 5th August 2006 against England. Her best performance with the ball in the format came on 23rd March 2012 when she returned with exceptional match figures (3.5-1-11-5) with the ball against Australia at Visakhapatnam.

Apart from her exploits with the ball, she also scored 405 runs in 46 innings. Her best performance with the bat for India came on 28th January 2014 when she scored an unbeaten 37 runs against Sri Lanka at Visakhapatnam. She announced her retirement from International cricket in September 2022. Her last international appearance came on 24th September 2022 in an ODI against England at Lord’s, London.

After she retired from International cricket, she took up coaching. She has been a part of the Mumbai Indians franchise as a bowling coach as well as a mentor in the Women’s Premier League. Mumbai Indians were crowned as the inaugural champions of the tournament. They were knocked out in the eliminator courtesy of their defeat against the eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru by five runs in the 2nd edition of the tournament.

She will now be involved in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) with the Trinbago Knight Riders as a mentor of the franchise for the upcoming 3rd edition of the tournament. “The youngsters can learn from the seniors, like overseas players, they’re coming and being in the dressing room, how they are preparing for the big game when to switch on when to switch off, all those things, professionalism, all those things you learn from those quality international players.” Jhulan Goswami speaks about the opportunities for youngsters to learn from the legends of the tournament during the WCPL.
