“We’re Definitely Up for Some Revenge,” Perth Scorchers Ready for Sydney Sixers Challenge

The Perth Scorchers enter the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 11 Challenger with renewed confidence and a stronger batting lineup, poised to take on Sydney Sixers for a coveted spot in the final. After a tough start to the season, the Scorchers’ improved batting depth has been vital to their resurgence, and opener Katie Mack believes it will be the key to their must-win clash at North Sydney Oval.

Mack is no stranger to Sydney, having grown up there, and she anticipates some lively banter when she faces her home team and her New South Wales teammates in the Sixers side on December 11. “I reckon Maitlan Brown will be sledging me at the top of her run up,” Mack said ahead of the match. Brown, the fast bowler from the Sixers, is famed for her competitive spirit, and her spirited comments have become part of the buildup to this high-stakes encounter.

The Scorchers and Sixers first met on the opening day of the tournament, with the Sixers clinching a comprehensive 10 wicket victory by restricting Perth to 109 runs. But since then, the Scorchers have found their rhythm, winning their elimination game against Melbourne Stars convincingly. Mack was a standout performer in that match, hammering a 37-ball half century, while young England recruit Freya Kemp also shone with a rapid 35 off 19 balls.

“We’re definitely up for some revenge,” Mack said at Perth airport on Wednesday. “We’ve finished really strong, I feel like the last part of our season has been must-win games.” The team has stood up at crucial moments, and different players have delivered.

Indeed, the Scorchers’ batting depth this season contrasts sharply with last year’s campaign, where only four players passed 100 runs for the whole tournament. In WBBL 10, Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine scored 386 and 213 runs respectively. They carried much of the run scoring load, but this season coach Becky Grundy focused on broadening the lineup’s firepower to avoid over reliance on a few key players.

The recruitment strategy included securing Mack from the Strikers, signing England’s Freya Kemp, and bringing in versatile all-rounder Paige Scholfield. While Chloe Tryon initially joined but later withdrew due to international duties, Kemp stepped up to fill the gap, steadily impressing with her aggressive middle-order batting. Scholfield’s lively strike rate and consistent contributions have also been crucial.

Grundy praised the team’s evolution and said they know tournament cricket demands more than one or two players performing. It’s been a relief to see our recruitment and strategies paying off, strengthening the squad’s depth. Sophie Devine, who has adapted her power game this season, benefits from the collective support, allowing her to play more freely and with patience when required.

The Sixers, meanwhile, are not without their challenges at North Sydney Oval. Despite winning their recent home games, their overall record at this ground has been patchy, with just one win in their last 12 outings stretching back to the WBBL 08 final in 2022. Mack is keen to exploit this statistic, noting, “I’m not sure about their record at North Sydney – I heard something about that.”

Though the Scorchers have not played at North Sydney Oval since WBBL 09, Mack is familiar with the venue and sees it as one of the easier grounds to adapt to. There’s nothing too different about it, so she does not expect any surprises. She feels it’s a nice ground with no demons, making it easier to adjust quickly.

With both teams packed with power hitters and balanced lineups, the match promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Scorchers’ newfound batting strength and resilience will be tested against a Sixers side eager to defend home ground advantage and secure their place in the final.
