Georgia Wareham’s career-best effort with the bat (69 off 45 balls) proved to be the differentiator for the Melbourne Renegades against the Hobart Hurricanes as they sealed a comprehensive victory.
The home side, Brisbane Heat led by skipper Jess Jonassen was up against Melbourne Stars led by skipper Annabel Sutherland at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane, in the 36th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 10.
Due to persistent rains, the toss was delayed and since we had lost a significant amount of time on the sidelines, the game was eventually reduced to a 7-overs-per-side contest. The Heat skipper Jess Jonassen inserted the Melbourne Stars to bat first on winning the toss. The Melbourne Stars huffed and puffed to a total of 46/6 in their quota of 7 overs. Rhys McKenna (15 off 9 balls), and Tess Flintoff (14 off 13 balls) were the top contributors with the bat for the Melbourne Stars.
Skipper Jess Jonassen (2-0-8-3), and Lucy Hamilton (2-0-8-2) significantly pulled things back in the favour of the home side after skipper Annabel Sutherland and Rhys McKenna got their side off to a solid start. Chasing a target of 47, the Harris sisters, Grace and Laura stepped out to open the innings for the Brisbane Heat.
The pair almost took their side home, before the opposition skipper Annabel Sutherland cleaned up Laura Harris to break the 34-run opening stand. The Brisbane Heat eventually got over the line with 9 wickets in hand and 10 balls to spare, with Grace Harris unbeaten on 21 (16), alongside Jemimah Rodrigues (7*). Skipper Jess Jonassen was awarded the Player of the Match for her match-decisive spell (2-0-8-3). She along with Lucy Hamilton not only set up a dominating victory for the Brisbane Heat but also booked their spot in the finals.
