The opening day of the 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup 2025, turned out to be lackluster as three out of the 6 games on the opening day of the tournament got washed out due to rain on 18th January 2025 (Saturday). We witnessed 12 out of 16 participating teams in action on the opening day.

On the 2nd day of the tournament, Sri Lanka led by skipper Manudi Nanayakkara got things underway in Group A against the hosts, Malaysia led by skipper Nur Dania Syuhada in the 7th match of the tournament as the action moved on to the Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur in the 2nd edition of the ICC Women’s Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. The defending champions India, led by skipper Niki Prasad kickstarted their title defense against the West Indies led by skipper Samara Ramnath in the 8th match of the tournament.

The Sri Lankan openers Sanjana Kavindi and wicket-keeper batter Sumudu Nisansala got their side off to a breezy start with a 40-run opening partnership after the Malaysian skipper Nur Dania Syuhada won the toss and inserted them to bat first. Marsya picked up the wicket of Sanjana Kavindi (30 off 13 balls) to provide the first breakthrough for the hosts, Malaysia.
The Sri Lankan batters continued to take the attack to the bowlers, tearing down the opposition with their fearless approach. The Manudi Nanayakkara-led side posted a massive total of 162/6 in their quota of 20 overs. The 49-run partnership for the 4th wicket between Hiruni Kumari (28 off 21 balls) and Dahami Sanethma (55 off 52 balls) was the highest partnership of the Sri Lankan innings.
Siti Nazwah (4-0-31-2) was the stand-out performer with the ball, while Marsya Qistina Abdullah (4-0-31-1), Nur Isma Dania (3-0-23-1), skipper Nur Dania Syuhada (4-0-36-1), and Suabika Manivannan (4-0-33-1), picked up a wicket each with the ball for Malaysia. Chasing a target of 163, the hosts, Malaysia succumbed to the scoreboard pressure and as a result, they were bundled out for just 23 in the 15th over of the run chase. Malaysia fell 139 runs short of the target.
None of the Malaysian batters managed to enter into the double digits. It is also the lowest total in the brief history of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup. Chamodi Praboda (4-2-5-3), was exceptional with the ball, skipper Manudi Nanayakkara (3-0-8-2), Rashmika Sewwandi (3.1-1-2-1) and Limansa Thilakarathna (2-0-3-2) were also super impressive with the ball for Sri Lanka.
Parunika Sisodia and Ayushi Shukla wreak havoc to dismiss the Windies for 44
The young 18-year-old pace-bowling all-rounder Joshitha V J struck twice on successive deliveries in the 4th over of the innings to trigger a horrible collapse after the Indian skipper Niki Prasad won the toss and opted to field first. The spin duo of Parunika Sisodia and Aayushi Shukla took over and spun a web over the West Indies batting line-up, wrapping them up for 44 in the 14th over of the innings.
Kenika Cassar (15 off 29 balls), and Asabi Callendar (12 off 20 balls) were the only batters to enter the double digits with the bat for the West Indies. Parunika Sisodia (2.2-0-7-3), Joshitha V J (2-0-5-2), and Aayushi Shukla (4-1-6-2) were exceptional with the ball for India.
India lost the wicket of their opening batter Gongadi Trisha on the 2nd ball of the run chase. Sanika Chalke (18 off 11 balls) joined wicket-keeper batter G Kamalini (16 off 13 balls) and saw the defending champions over the line in the 5th over of the run chase to seal the game by 9 wickets starting their campaign off to a flyer. Jahzara Claxton (2-0-18-1) was the lone wicket-taker with the ball for West Indies.
