New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced its squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka, which presents a perfect blend of youth and experience. While the usual stalwarts will take on the cricket field as expected, the board has also named four players who could potentially make their debuts in the limited-over series.

The squad comprises Emma McLeod, Izzy Sharp, and Bree Illing—who have been selected for the first time, along with wicketkeeper Polly Inglis, who was previously included in last year’s ODI squad for the India tour. The selection calls from the selectors are intriguing and could play a ploy in helping the team management mold their squad for the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be played in India in October.
In New Zealand’s 50-over domestic competition, the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, Emma McLeod has been a stellar performer with a total of 300 runs across eight innings, showcasing her ability to score big. The Central Hinds all-rounder has made the most of available opportunities, crossing the fifty-run mark in two innings and making a significant impact to the team. The 18-year old’s performance highlights her potential as a key player, contributing valuable runs to her team’s campaign.
Canterbury Magicians’ wicketkeeper-batter Izzy Sharp has had a decent record in the latest edition of the Super Smash tournament, scoring 121 runs in 9 innings. Though she may have not enjoyed a good time with the bat in the One Dayers, accumulating just over 200 runs from 10 outings, the wicketkeeper has been swift behind the sticks and has significantly contributed to the success of the team.

Auckland Hearts seamer Bree Illing will also get an opportunity to be a part of the White Ferns squad. In the 50-over competition, Illing has picked 19 wickets from 10 matches with her best bowling figures registered at 4/39 and 4/49. In the Super Smash, she had scalped 8 wickets from 10 matches with an impressive economy rate of 5.44.
Otago Sparks wicketkeeper-batter Polly Inglis has earned the spot in the squad again, though she has not yet made her international debut. She has amassed 254 runs in 8 innings with a single 50 plus score in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield competition. The 28-year-old played for the same team in the Women’s Super Smash, the T20 tournament, and scored 172 runs across 11 innings in the 2024-25 season.
