West Indies return home after a challenging tour of England, where they faced a 3-0 whitewash in both the ODIs and T20Is. Earlier in April, they narrowly missed out on qualification for the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup in India, finishing third—level on points with Bangladesh, but edged out on net run rate by a slender margin of just 0.013.

South Africa, on the other hand, are gearing up for a busy calendar with three ODIs and T20Is each against West Indies, followed by three ODIs against Pakistan—all ahead of the ODI World Cup. Their recent form has been underwhelming, having missed the tri-series final in Sri Lanka after managing only one win in four games. Overall, they’ve won just three of their last 13 ODIs.

Historically, South Africa holds the edge in head-to-head ODIs, with 16 wins from 33 encounters, while West Indies have claimed 10. Three matches have ended in ties, and four have had no result.

Players to watch out:

Hayley Matthews

The West Indies skipper continues to be the side’s most bankable star. She was Player of the Series in the T20Is against England and managed a gritty 48 off 47 in the first ODI before an injury sidelined her. In ODIs, she has 2,922 runs and 119 wickets from 95 matches, including bests of 141 and 4/15. With both bat and ball, she remains West Indies’ talisman.

Karishma Ramharack

A cornerstone of the West Indies’ spin attack, Ramharack’s consistency offers crucial middle-overs control. She has bagged 40 wickets in 40 ODIs, with best figures of 4/12. In the England series, her spells of 2/57 and 1/31 showed glimpses of her threat. If the pitch offers turn, expect her to play a pivotal role.

Laura Wolvaardt

The South African captain, aged 26, has already racked up a formidable 4,389 ODI runs from 104 games, averaging 49.31 with a top score of an unbeaten 184. Despite modest returns in the Sri Lanka tri-series (43, 10, 33), she remains a vital pillar in South Africa’s top order and will be eager to lead from the front.

Chloe Tryon

The 31-year-old all-rounder was named ICC Player of the Month for May, thanks to her explosive performances in Sri Lanka. She struck 18, 35, 67, and 74 with the bat, and her bowling highlight was a fifer (5/34), including a hat-trick. With 2,065 runs and 53 wickets in 110 ODIs, Tryon is a genuine match-winner.

Pitch:

The Three Ws Oval generally offers a batting-friendly track with consistent bounce and pace. Fast bowlers can find help, particularly in the middle overs. Historically, the average 1st innings score is 226, while the 2nd innings average is 197, indicating a slight favor to teams batting first.
