Hong Kong Women began cautiously after being sent in to bat, but their opening partnership never really gathered momentum. Captain Natasha Miles looked positive from the outset, finding the gaps with authority, while Mariko Hill struggled to accelerate against Uganda’s disciplined new-ball attack. The pair added 34 runs for the opening wicket, laying a decent platform before the breakthrough arrived in the eighth over. Hill’s patient innings of 13 from 25 deliveries, featuring two boundaries, came to an end through a run-out involving Janet Mbabazi and Esther Iloku, leaving Hong Kong at 34/1.
Miles continued to anchor the innings and found useful support from Yasmin Daswani. Together, the duo stitched a valuable 59-run partnership for the second wicket, the best stand of the innings. Miles was fluent throughout her stay, striking seven boundaries during her well-crafted 45 off 43 balls, while Daswani contributed a brisk 39 from 42 deliveries, including four fours. Just when the partnership threatened to push Hong Kong towards a challenging total, Uganda struck back in quick succession. Miles departed at 93/2 in the 17.3rd over after being trapped by Concy Aweka, before Kary Chan managed only 2 runs and fell to Immaculate Nakisuyi. The finishing touches never came for Hong Kong despite Maryam Bibi remaining unbeaten on 6 off 5 balls and Marina Lamplough finishing 2 not out from 2 deliveries. Chasing 109 for victory, Uganda endured an early setback when opener Stephani Nampina was dismissed for 11 off 14 balls, trapped leg-before by Maryam Bibi with the score at 27/1. Captain Janet Mbabazi then partnered Prosscovia Alako in a steady rebuilding effort. The pair added 25 runs for the second wicket, rotating the strike effectively before Mbabazi fell for 24 from 24 deliveries, which included four boundaries, as Marina Lamplough provided the breakthrough with Uganda at 52/2.
The responsibility then rested on Alako, who anchored the chase with maturity. She shared another important 30-run partnership with Rita Musamali, who scored a useful 15 from 15 balls before being run out by the combination of Lamplough and Daswani. Despite the wicket, Uganda remained in control as Alako continued to find boundaries at crucial moments. Hong Kong’s bowlers fought hard despite defending a modest total. Marina Lamplough delivered the most economical spell, picking up 1 for 12 in four overs at an outstanding economy of 3.00. Ruchitha Venkatesh finished with 1 for 14, while Kary Chan also chipped in with 1 for 23, whereas Alison Siu bowled 3.5 overs for 26 runs without a wicket. Despite their efforts, Uganda’s measured batting display ensured the target was comfortably overhauled.
