India’s convincing 59-run win in the opening One-Day International (ODI) of the 3-match series has put New Zealand on the back foot, with the series now on the line. The series decider, the 2nd ODI, will be played on the 27th of October 2024, at 1:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
India, winning the toss and opting to bat first in the 1st ODI, stumbled early as skipper Smriti Mandhana was dismissed for 5 (7). Shafali Verma then steadied the innings with Yastika Bhatia, putting on a 37-run recovery stand before Shafali departed for 33 (22). The momentum was short-lived as Dayalan Hemalatha added just 3 runs, and following Yastika’s departure for 37 (43), India found themselves struggling at 91/4.
Debutant Tejal Hasabnis, in partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues (35), helped India recover with a valuable 61-run stand. Tejal’s contribution of 44 continued to stabilize the innings, adding another 29 runs with Deepti Sharma. Deepti, later supported by Arundhati Reddy, added 37 crucial runs as India got to 218/7. However, India lost their last three wickets for 9 runs, with Deepti the last to fall for a critical 41 (52), concluding India’s innings at 227 in 44.3 overs. The Kerr sisters, Melie (4) and Jess (3), shared seven wickets between them, while Eden Carson bagged a couple and Suzie Bates one.
In reply, New Zealand lost opener Suzie Bates early for 1 (4), but Georgia Plimmer and Lauren Down kept the chase alive with a 34-run partnership. However, they lost a couple of wickets in quick succession as Georgia fell for 25 (25), and Sophie Devine was run out soon after for 2 (5). It was long before Lauren’s gritty 26 (56) came to an end, leaving New Zealand struggling at 79/4. Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday added stability with a 49-run partnership, but both were dismissed three balls apart for 31 and 39, reducing New Zealand to 128/6.
Jess Kerr’s departure for 3 left an injured Melie Kerr batting with the lower order. She dug in alongside Izzy Gaze, adding 31 runs before New Zealand lost their final two wickets for just one more run, ending on 168 all out. Radha Yadav led India’s bowling with 3 wickets, while debutant Saima Thakor impressed with a couple.
