Batting first, Rwanda posted a competitive total of 139 for 6 in their 20 overs, anchored by a superb half-century. In reply, the Zimbabwean side showcased immense composure under pressure, successfully chasing down the target by reaching 140 for 7 with just 10 balls to spare. It was a classic tournament opener that set a high benchmark for the matches to follow.

Rwanda’s Solid FoundationAfter winning the toss, the Zimbabwe High Performance XI elected to field, aiming to exploit early morning conditions. Rwanda’s innings was built entirely around a brilliant, aggressive knock from Belyse Murekatete. While her teammates struggled to break free against a disciplined bowling attack, Murekatete was in sublime touch, smashing 54 runs off just 23 deliveries, a knock fueled by 3 boundaries and 5 towering sixes. Gisele Ishimwe provided vital support with a patient 24 off 25 balls, helping Rwanda recover from early jitters and establish a platform.

Despite Murekatete’s onslaught, the Zimbabweans managed to pull things back in the later stages of the innings to prevent the score from getting out of hand. Mitchel Mavunga was the standout bowler for the visitors, delivering a brilliantly restrictive spell of 1 for 17 in her 4 overs. She received great support from Nyasha Gwanzura, who finished with economical figures of 1 for 18 from her 4 overs. Late strikes from Adel Zimunhu and Lindokuhle Mabhero kept chipping away at the Rwandan line-up, ensuring the hosts were restricted to 139 for 6 when a score beyond 150 looked well within reach.

Chasing 140 for victory, the Zimbabwe High Performance XI got off to a flyer thanks to a blistering cameo from opener Kelly Ndiraya. Ndiraya took the attack to the Rwandan bowlers, smashing 39 runs off a mere 23 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes, before she was dismissed. Once the initial fireworks subsided, Runyararo Pasipanodya stepped up to anchor the chase. Pasipanodya played a perfectly calculated innings, anchoring the middle order with a top score of 40* runs from 36 balls, hitting 6 boundaries to keep the required run rate well under control.

The match seemed safely in Zimbabwe’s hands before a sudden cluster of wickets triggered tension in the dugout. Rwanda’s star all-rounder Henriette Ishimwe bowled an incredibly tight spell, giving away just 8 runs in 3 overs while picking up 2 crucial wickets, including 2 maidens. Captain Marie Diane Bimenyimana also struck twice, taking 2 for 21. However, Vimbai Mutungwindu played a vital, ice-cool cameo under pressure, blasting two boundaries in her quick-fire 10 off 4 balls to guide Zimbabwe High Performance XI over the line at 140 for 7 in 18.2 overs. For her match-winning anchoring act, Runyararo Pasipanodya was rightly named the Player of the Match.
