Faye Tunnicliffe’s Maiden T20I Fifty Helps South Africa Women Secure T20I Series Over Ireland

The second T20 International (T20I) proved to be a high-scoring affair but ultimately saw the dominant South African side clinch the three-match series over Ireland with a convincing 65-run victory.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Proteas Women posted a formidable total of 201 for 5 in their 20 overs, powered by a fine batting display. Ireland, while showing significantly more fight and finishing the full twenty overs, could only muster 136 for 3 in their chase. Despite a valiant, unbeaten half-century from Orla Prendergast, the target proved too steep, allowing the home team to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

The tone was set early by the South African openers, who gave their side a flying start. Faye Tunnicliffe, in particular, looked in fine form, striking seven fours on her way to a maiden T20I half-century, scoring 51 runs off 42 balls. She was ably supported by Sune Luus, who played a quick-fire knock of 37 runs from just 24 deliveries, including six fours. This explosive opening partnership put on 78 runs before Luus was dismissed in the 10th over, laying the perfect foundation for their side to aim for another massive score.

Even after the loss of the two openers and captain Laura Wolvaardt (22 off 16), the South African innings didn’t slow down. The momentum was turbo-charged by a sensational cameo from the returning Dane van Niekerk. She smashed a destructive 41 runs off just 19 balls, an innings peppered with three fours and three sixes at a strike rate of over 215.78. This was followed by a swift finish from Chloe Tryon, whose unbeaten 16 off 7 balls helped the team blast past the 200 mark, culminating in a total of 201/5.

While the run rate was high, young Irish left-arm off-spinner Aimee Maguire managed to carve out a brilliant performance with the ball. Though she conceded a few runs towards the end, her figures of 3 wickets for 43 runs from her four overs were a standout effort against such a powerful batting line-up. She was responsible for breaking the opening stand, getting Luus caught, and then later accounting for Tunnicliffe and Wolvaardt, effectively halting what could have been an even more devastating final score. Her crucial breakthroughs were a major positive for the Irish bowling unit.

Ireland’s response saw them lose both openers—Gaby Lewis (19) and Amy Hunter (14)—in the 7th over, thanks to a double strike by Chloe Tryon (2/24). However, the middle order showed commendable resilience. Orla Prendergast anchored the innings, bringing up a well-deserved, unbeaten 51 off 43 balls, featuring four fours and a six. She combined with Leah Paul, who played a brisk knock of 40 runs off 29 balls, to stitch together an important 76-run partnership for the third wicket.

While the required rate remained out of reach, their effort ensured the team batted out their 20 overs, finishing on a respectable 136 for 3. Ultimately, the match showcased the gulf in batting firepower between the two sides. South Africa’s total of 201 was built on depth and aggressive stroke-play from top to bottom, with five different batters scoring over 20 runs at high strike rates.

While Ireland’s chase saw brilliant, fighting innings from Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul, the pressure of chasing a record total was simply too much. Their final score of 136/3, though a decent effort, meant the South African women secured the series with a match still to play, proving their readiness for the upcoming competitive schedule.
