Australia moves into the second One-Day International (ODI) of the 3-match series against India with a 1-0 lead, winning the series opener convincingly by 5 wickets in a chase of 101. At the same time, it will be a must-win game for India to keep themselves alive in the series. The second ODI will be played on 8th December 2024 at 5.15 am (IST) at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane.
Harmanpreet Kaur-led India elected to bat first on a sunny afternoon in Brisbane but didn’t ram on the advantage of batting first on a batting-friendly surface. After striking consecutive boundaries against Megan Schutt, Smriti Mandhana was trapped off a short delivery as her edge carried to Beth Mooney’s gloves and India lost their first wicket with 9 on the board.
Harleen Deol who made her return to the side after a long injury layoff came out to bat at three and faced a challenging spell against the Australian bowlers who eventually had her dismissed for 19. India’s middle-order batters; Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues failed to convert their starts, dismissed for 17 and 23 respectively. Megan Schutt ran through the Indian lineup, registering a fifer, as India was folded for 100, their second-lowest total against Australia in Australia.
Chasing a total of 101, opening the innings, Phoebe Litchfield provided the host with an aggressive start scoring 35 off 29 balls before being dismissed by Renuka Singh Thakur. Renuka triggered a mini collapse, with the hosts slipping to 4/77 after a 48-run opening wicket partnership between Litchfield and debutant Georgia Voll. The latter anchored Australia’s innings with an unbeaten 46 off 42 balls as Australia won the match by 5 wickets and Megan Schutt was awarded the Player of the Match for her 5/19, her best bowling figures in ODIs.
