Phoebe Litchfield Set for Australia Return Ahead of Crucial India World Cup Clash

Australia batter Phoebe Litchfield is close to returning from injury and could be back in the team for Australia’s final group-stage match against India at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Australia coach Shelley Nitschke has confirmed that the young left-hander is recovering well and is expected to be available for the important match at Lord’s on Sunday.

Litchfield suffered a calf injury during Australia’s opening match of the tournament against South Africa in Manchester. Before getting injured, she played an important role in Australia’s strong start to the World Cup, helping her team secure a convincing victory over the Proteas.

Since then, Litchfield has missed Australia’s last three matches while focusing on her recovery. Even without one of their key batters, Australia have continued their excellent form, winning all their matches and becoming one of the first teams to book a place in the semi-finals.

The Australians have looked strong throughout the tournament, beating Bangladesh, Netherlands and Pakistan comfortably. However, getting Litchfield back before the knockout stage would be a major boost for the team.

Speaking about her recovery, Nitschke said the signs are positive and that Litchfield is getting closer to a return. “I think Pheebs (Litchfield) is tracking really well and hopefully will be available for the India game,” Nitschke told cricket.com.au.

“And then, that’s going to be really tough call – Pheebs is likely to come back into that No.3 position, so then we’ve got some decisions to make on what the set-up looks like and how to structure up. But obviously someone has come out for her.”

If Litchfield returns, she is expected to go straight back into her usual No.3 batting spot. The talented batter has become an important part of Australia’s top order thanks to her aggressive style and ability to score quickly against both pace and spin.

Her return would likely mean some changes to Australia’s batting order. Veteran all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who recently produced a Player of the Match performance against Pakistan, would probably move back down to the No.4 position.

Perry has been in excellent form during the tournament and recently scored her first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup half-century. Australia will now have the challenge of fitting all their in-form players into the same lineup.

The selection headache does not stop there. If Litchfield returns, one player will have to miss out. Young fast bowler Lucy Hamilton could be the unlucky player to lose her place, although Australia have several different combinations they can choose from depending on the conditions and opposition.

Nitschke also suggested experienced all-rounder Grace Harris remains a strong option. Harris has played plenty of cricket at Lord’s during her time with London Spirit in The Hundred and understands the conditions well.

“She (Harris) has played at Lord’s quite a bit with the London Spirit, so she certainly throws her hat into the ring as well,” Nitschke said. “She’s been really unlucky so we’ve certainly got some options.”

Australia has all but secured a semi-final place after winning their first four matches. However, the upcoming clash against India is still one of the biggest games of the group stage.

India have also been one of the strongest teams in the tournament and are expected to provide Australia’s toughest challenge so far. The match will be a good test for both teams before the knockout rounds begin.

A victory would guarantee Australia finish on top of Group 1 and carry an unbeaten record into the semi-finals. Finishing first would also give them extra confidence as they continue their push for another world title.

For Litchfield, returning against a quality side like India would be the perfect chance to regain match practice before the most important games of the tournament.

The 23-year-old has become one of the brightest young players in world cricket and has already played several important innings for Australia. Her fearless approach and attacking stroke play make her a valuable player at the top of the order.

With the semi-finals fast approaching, Australia will be delighted to have one of their star batters almost ready to return. If she is declared fit, Litchfield’s comeback could provide another major boost for a side that already looks one of the favourites to lift the Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.
