Ireland Eye Historic First Women’s T20 World Cup Win Against Sri Lanka

As Ireland continue their search for a historic first-ever ICC Women’s T20 World Cup win, they will take confidence from their recent success against Sri Lanka ahead of a crucial Group 2 clash in Bristol.

The time has come for Ireland Women to finally break their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup winless streak.

Ireland are still looking for their first-ever victory at the tournament. Their record now stands at 20 matches after a heartbreaking four-run defeat to defending champions New Zealand in their previous game. It was also their third loss of the ongoing World Cup campaign.

Despite the defeat, Ireland can take plenty of positives from their performance against New Zealand. They pushed one of the strongest teams in the competition all the way and showed they can compete with the best sides in world cricket. That performance will give the Irish squad confidence that they can finally register their first World Cup win.

Ireland can also draw encouragement from their recent record against Sri Lanka. The two sides met in 2024, with Ireland winning a three-match ODI series 2-1. The teams also shared the T20I series 1-1 during the same tour.

One of Ireland’s biggest highlights from that series came when current captain Gaby Lewis played a stunning innings of 119 runs from just 75 balls to help her side secure a seven-run victory over Sri Lanka. Those memories will provide extra belief as they prepare for another important meeting.

Experienced all-rounder Leah Paul believes Ireland are heading in the right direction despite their results so far in the tournament.

“Sri Lanka is a team that we have had success against in the last few years and it’s a team we know relatively well,” she told the media.

“If we can keep progressing in the areas we want to improve on from the last couple of games, we believe we can put in a good performance and get our first-ever World Cup win. We’ve definitely picked up good few learnings, especially after the games against England and New Zealand. In the batting department, we want to build those partnerships in the middle period and then trying to contain the ball in the middle overs.

“We pride ourselves on our resilience so hopefully we can stick together and have each other’s backs for the last two games.”

While Ireland are chasing history, Sri Lanka are also under pressure after a disappointing defeat to West Indies Women. The five-wicket loss seriously damaged Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals and left them needing victories in their remaining group matches.

Sri Lanka coach Jamie Siddons knows the importance of the match and wants his side to move on quickly from their recent setback.

“We’ll get over the disappointment of the West Indies quickly and turn our attention to Ireland. It’s a massive game for us,” said Sri Lanka coach Jamie Siddons.

“We cannot roll over in that game. We need to put our best team on the park. We need to play really well and get a win in that game and then prepare really well for Scotland because they’re a great team.”

With both teams still fighting to keep their hopes alive, the match carries huge importance. Ireland will be aiming to make history by securing their first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup victory, while Sri Lanka will be desperate to stay in the race for a semi-final spot.

The two sides will meet at the County Ground in Bristol in the second match of a Group 2 double-header. Earlier in the day, New Zealand will take on Scotland in another key contest. With so much at stake, both teams will be determined to leave everything on the field.
