Marizanne Kapp delivered one of the defining performances of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup so far, starring with both bat and ball as South Africa defeated India by six wickets in a high-stakes clash at Old Trafford. After claiming 2/27 with the ball, Kapp produced a magnificent unbeaten 81*(45) to guide South Africa to 161/4 in 19.1 overs, successfully chasing India’s competitive total of 158/7 with five balls to spare.

India’s innings began aggressively after Harmanpreet Kaur opted to bat first. Smriti Mandhana struck 17(12) before falling to Kapp, while Shafali Verma continued her impressive tournament with a blistering 31(15), including four fours and a six. The opening pair helped India race to 59 runs in the powerplay despite losing wickets. South Africa gradually regained control through disciplined bowling. Ayabonga Khaka removed Yastika Bhatia for 15(13), Nadine de Klerk dismissed Jemimah Rodrigues for 12(14), and Shabnim Ismail produced another reliable spell, finishing with 2/28.
Harmanpreet contributed 24(22) and Deepti Sharma added 29(21), but neither batter was able to convert their starts into a match-defining innings. Kapp led the attack brilliantly, conceding just 27 runs from her four overs while removing both Mandhana and Richa Ghosh (15). India eventually closed on 158/7, a total that looked competitive on a surface where stroke-making was not always straightforward.
South Africa’s chase got off to a cautious start. Laura Wolvaardt scored 20(21) before becoming one of three wickets for left-arm spinner Shree Charani, who delivered an outstanding spell of 3/24. Charani also removed Annerie Dercksen for a duck and later dismissed Nadine de Klerk, briefly putting India in a strong position. At 25/2 inside the powerplay, South Africa were under pressure, but Kapp responded with an innings of the highest quality.
Combining composure with calculated aggression, she steadily wrestled momentum away from India while finding an able partner in Tazmin Brits. Brits contributed a valuable 40(36), helping add stability after the early setbacks. Their partnership laid the foundation for the chase and ensured the required rate never spiralled out of control. Once Kapp moved through the gears, the contest swung decisively in South Africa’s favour.
The all-rounder brought up a fluent half-century from 34 deliveries before launching a late assault that featured seven fours and four sixes. Chloe Tryon then provided the finishing touches with a rapid 10*(4), including two boundaries, as South Africa crossed the target with relative comfort. While Charani’s 3/24 and Shafali Verma’s surprise wicket offered India moments of hope, Kapp’s all-round brilliance ultimately proved the difference. Her match-winning display not only secured a crucial victory for South Africa but also strengthened their position in the race for the knockout stages.
