Sophia Dunkley’s classy 57 off 37 and a brutal late assault from Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson powered England Women to a commanding 38-run victory over Scotland Women in their Women’s T20 World Cup clash at Leeds on Saturday. England finished on 200/5 after being asked to bat, before restricting Scotland to 162/7 despite a spirited effort from their neighbours.

After being put into bat, England recovered from the worst possible start when Amy Jones fell for a first-ball duck to Kirstie Gordon (2/30). Scotland’s bowlers initially kept things under control, but Dunkley quickly changed the tempo with a fluent innings featuring eight fours and a six. Danni Wyatt-Hodge managed 7(11), yet Dunkley and Alice Capsey ensured England remained on course for a big total.
Capsey struck a brisk 40(25), taking advantage of the fielding restrictions and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Scotland found breakthroughs through Gordon, Kathryn Bryce (1/42), Hannah Rainey (1/30) and Priyanaz Chatterji (1/35), reducing England to 139/5 after 16.3 overs. What followed was the defining phase of the match. Kemp exploded for 39*(16), smashing four fours and two sixes, while Gibson hammered 30*(11) with five boundaries and a six.
The pair added an unbeaten 61 runs from just 21 balls, turning a strong position into a dominant one. England blasted their way to 200/5, scoring at exactly 10 runs per over.
Chasing 201, Scotland made an encouraging start. Katherine Fraser took the attack to England’s bowlers with 23(13), while Darcey Carter compiled 29(23). Scotland reached 52/1 at the end of the powerplay, briefly raising hopes of a competitive chase. But England’s experienced attack gradually tightened its grip. Sophie Ecclestone delivered the crucial breakthroughs, dismissing Carter and Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce for 6(9).
The left-arm spinner was outstanding, returning figures of 2/23 from four overs and conceding just 5.75 runs per over. Sarah Bryce kept Scotland in the hunt with a determined 34(24), but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Charlie Dean finished with 1/38, Linsey Smith claimed 1/37, Dani Gibson returned 1/14 from two overs, and Kemp capped an excellent all-round outing with 1/13 from her two overs. Lauren Bell was wicketless but contributed with important pressure during the chase.
Pippa Sproul fought with 27(20), while Gordon added an unbeaten 23*(17) late in the innings, but the required rate continued to climb beyond reach. Scotland eventually closed on 162/7, falling 38 runs short of the target.
England’s victory was built on two decisive moments, Dunkley’s commanding knock at the top and the breathtaking finishing burst from Kemp and Gibson. Combined with Ecclestone’s control with the ball, it proved too much for Scotland who showed plenty of fight but ultimately could not match England’s firepower.
