The previous edition runners-up, South Africa, led by skipper Laura Wolvaardt, were up against Pakistan, led by skipper Fatima Sana, at Edgbaston, Birmingham, in the final game of the 2nd triple-header day on 17th June 2026 of the ongoing 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Australia (by 9 wickets) and India (by 95 runs) registered emphatic victories against Bangladesh and the Netherlands, respectively, in the first couple of games, with both sides taking the top two spots on the day.

South Africa retained the same side that took the field in their previous clash against Australia. Pakistan made a couple of changes; Iram Javed made her way into the side, replacing Saira Jabeen, leg-spinner Tuba Hassan strengthened the spin attack, replacing Tasmia Rubab in the starting 11.

Skipper Fatima Sana saves the blemishes with a fighting 55

The experienced veteran Marizanne Kapp set the tone perfectly for the Proteas by dismissing wicket-keeper batter Muneeba Ali on the first ball of the game. Kapp ripped apart the Pakistani top-order, bagging a 3-fer inside the first three overs of the contest.

The Laura Wolvaadt-led side were all over Pakistan, turning their worst nightmares into a reality, as they were reduced to 50/8 in the 11th over of the innings, staring at a possibility of getting bundled out inside 15 overs. However, skipper Fatima Sana, witnessing a collapse from one end, was joined by a capable ally who could hold one end as they hoped to accumulate as many runs as possible. The duo took the game deep, weathered the early storm, and grew in confidence through the middle overs, assessing the conditions on offer.

Both the batters switched gears towards the backend of the innings as the partnership breached the uncharted territory, registering the highest 9th wicket stand in the history of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, worth 71 runs. The stand infused belief into the Pakistani camp, as they posted 126/9 in their 20 overs, with skipper Fatima Sana leading from the front with an unbeaten half-century of 55* (38 balls), and Tuba Hassan (23 off 27 balls) chipped in with a vital contribution with the bat.

Marizanne Kapp (4-0-23-3), Shabnim Ismail (4-0-15-1), and Nonkululeko Mlaba (4-0-17-0) were exceptional with the ball for South Africa, while Ayabonga Khaka (3-0-21-1) played her part with the ball.

Fatima Sana, Spinners push Proteas into a tense finish

Skipper Fatima Sana, who had a memorable day with the bat, provided the first breakthrough for her side by dismissing Sune Luus (5 off 5 balls) in the 2nd over of the run chase. Annerie Dercksen strolled to the crease and switched the counter-attack mode on as skipper Laura Wolvaardt was figuring out the conditions on offer, trying to get deep into the run chase. The duo stitched a crucial 42-run stand for the 2nd wicket, bringing the control back into the run chase.

The leg-spinner Tuba Hassan got the big scalp of the opposition skipper, Laura Wolvaardt (8 off 12 balls) in the 7th over of the run chase, to provide the 2nd breakthrough for Pakistan. Marizanne Kapp joined Annerie Dercksen at the crease, and the duo stitched another crucial 23-run stand for the 3rd wicket.

The Pakistani spinners breathed life into the contest by dismissing both the set batters, Marizanne Kapp (10 off 8 balls), and Annerie Dercksen (52 off 35 balls) in quick succession. Dercksen registered her maiden ICC Women’s T20 World Cup half-century before getting dismissed in the 11th over of the innings as the Proteas were reduced to 76/4.

The Proteas middle-order, anchored by Nadine de Klerk (37 off 28 balls), kept chipping away at the target through decent partnerships. Pakistan, on the other hand, continued to throw the timely counter-punches to spice up the contest. The South Africans almost made a meal out of the contest, with a little bit of luck favouring them towards the backend as they eventually got over the line with 2 wickets in hand and 19 balls to spare.

Fatima Sana carried the momentum from her batting contribution, converting into her bowling exploits (2.5-0-16-3), alongside Tuba Hassan (4-0-28-2), Sadia Iqbal (4-0-26-2), and Nashra Sandhu (4-0-28-1), all of whom were impressive with the ball for Pakistan.

Annerie Dercksen was awarded the Player of the Match for her decisive half-century that infused the momentum into the run chase as South Africa secured their first points of the ongoing edition.
