Hayley Matthews‘ rise was extraordinary. Born in Barbados, she was captaining a boys’ school team by the age of 11 and made her senior debut for Barbados Women at just 12. A gifted all-round athlete who also won a javelin gold medal at the 2015 CARIFTA Games, Matthews ultimately chose cricket and quickly emerged as one of the Caribbean’s brightest talents. Early exposure in domestic cricket and the Women’s Big Bash League helped fast-track her development and establish her fearless, match-winning style.
Hayley Matthews’ International Career
Matthews made her T20I debut for West Indies in 2014 at just 16 years old and announced herself on the global stage at the 2016 Women’s T20 World Cup. Aged just 18, she smashed 66 off 45 balls in the final against Australia to help West Indies win their maiden world title, producing one of the most memorable innings in tournament history.
Since then, she has developed into one of the world’s leading all-rounders and now captains West Indies. Matthews has scored 3,236 runs in 120 WT20Is at an average of 29.68 and strike rate of 116.65, including three centuries and 21 fifties, while also taking 119 wickets at 19.38. She is the first West Indies woman to score 3,000 T20I runs and take 100 wickets and famously won eight consecutive Player of the Match awards in T20Is, underlining her dominance in the format.
Matthews has excelled in every major T20 league around the world. She was the Purple Cap winner and fifth-highest run-scorer in the inaugural WPL in 2023, playing a key role in Mumbai Indians’ title-winning campaign. Across her WPL career, she has scored 867 runs and claimed 46 wickets in 34 matches.
She has amassed 1,697 runs and 77 wickets in the WBBL and was instrumental in the Melbourne Renegades’ maiden WBBL title in 2024, scoring 324 runs during the season before producing a match-winning 69 off 61 balls and taking 2 wickets in the final. In The Hundred, she has accumulated 795 runs and 39 wickets, while in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League she has enjoyed success both as a player and leader.
Captaining Barbados Royals to the 2023 and 2024 WCPL titles, Matthews finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker in 2024 with 11 wickets and the second-highest run-scorer with 147 runs, underlining her all-round value. Across her WCPL career, she has scored 424 runs and taken 23 wickets in 13 matches.
Combining explosive batting, reliable off-spin, leadership and exceptional athleticism, Matthews enters the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as West Indies’ captain, premier all-rounder and one of the standout players in the tournament.
