Birmingham Phoenix Women strengthened their hopes of staying in the race for the knockout stage with an important seven-wicket victory over Welsh Fire Women in Match 15 of The Hundred Women’s Competition 2026 at Edgbaston. Chasing a target of 145, Phoenix reached 145/3 in 99 balls, winning with one ball to spare. Captain Ellyse Perry led the chase with an unbeaten half-century, while Alice Capsey played a match-changing knock to help her side return to winning ways after a difficult run in the tournament.
After winning the toss, Birmingham Phoenix decided to bowl first. Welsh Fire made a positive start and built their innings around opener Georgia Voll, who continued her excellent form with the bat. Voll played confidently from the beginning, timing the ball beautifully and finding regular boundaries. She remained the main batter throughout the innings and finished with 78 from 55 balls, including nine fours and two sixes, helping Welsh Fire post a competitive total.
Voll received useful support from Ella McCaughan, who contributed 19 from 16 balls, before captain Sophie Devine provided a strong finish with an unbeaten 35 from just 19 deliveries. Devine struck two fours and three sixes, scoring quickly during the closing stages. Georgia Wareham remained unbeaten on 6 as Welsh Fire completed their innings on 144/3 from 100 balls, giving their bowlers a challenging total to defend.
Birmingham’s bowlers worked hard to stop Welsh Fire from crossing the 150-run mark. Alice Capsey was the standout performer with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 24 runs. Linsey Smith dismissed the well-set Voll, while Lauren Filerdelivered one of the most economical spells of the match, conceding only 15 runs from her 20 balls. Their disciplined bowling ensured Birmingham remained in the contest despite Voll’s excellent innings.
The Phoenix chase began badly when Davina Perrin was dismissed for 2 in the opening five balls. Tammy Beaumontadded 14, but Birmingham slipped to 35/2, giving Welsh Fire early control of the match. At that stage, the visitors looked capable of defending their total as the pressure continued to build on the home side.
The match turned in Birmingham’s favour when Alice Capsey and Ellyse Perry came together at the crease. Capsey played with positive intent from the beginning, attacking every loose delivery. She scored a superb 51 from only 29 balls, hitting seven fours and one six, and reached her half-century in just 28 deliveries. Her fearless batting shifted the momentum completely and put Welsh Fire’s bowlers under pressure.
While Capsey attacked, Perry anchored the innings with her usual calm approach. The experienced Australian all-rounder rotated the strike well, punished the bad balls and made sure Birmingham stayed ahead of the required rate. Perry remained unbeaten on 68 from 46 balls, striking nine fours and one six, before guiding Phoenix safely across the finish line. Annerie Dercksen stayed unbeaten on 4 as Birmingham completed the chase with one ball remaining.
Welsh Fire’s bowlers tried hard to fight back, with Grace Potts, Georgia Wareham, and Georgia Voll taking one wicket each. However, they could not stop the outstanding partnership between Perry and Capsey, which proved to be the difference between the two teams. For her unbeaten match-winning innings, Ellyse Perry was named Player of the Match after another outstanding all-round display.
The victory also improved Birmingham Phoenix Women’s position in the standings. They climbed to fifth place with 6 points from four matches, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive despite a negative net run rate of -2.184. Welsh Fire Women remained seventh with 4 points after losing three of their four matches. Southern Brave Women continue to lead the table with 16 points, followed by Trent Rockets Women on 12 and Manchester Super Giants Women on 10. With several league matches still to be played, every point will remain important in the race for the knockout stage.
