Aamir Khan starrer Dangal was one of the most popular sports biopics. Released in 2016, the film highlighted the story of the Phogat sisters, played by Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The film explained the sport of wrestling while providing an engaging narrative of the father-daughter story as Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former wrestler, decides to fulfill his dream of winning a gold medal for his country by training his daughters for the Commonwealth Games in a world where women playing the sport wasn’t welcomed and is considered a taboo.

The film has Inayat play the role of young Mithali and one of India’s finest, Taapsee Pannu play the role of a grown Mithali Raj. The story shows how Mithali Raj at a young age gets connected to cricket from being a Bharatnatyam dancer. The film moves on to show the struggles and the hard yards Mithali Raj put in. It then revolves around how Mithali led from the front and made her bat do all the talking for the Indian Women’s team to receive a respectful status, worked hard towards equality gap come close and ends by showing how she was successful to help bring the spotlight on the Women’s Team.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas starrer Mary Kom was released in 2014 and was directed by Omung Kumar. The story shows the life of Mary Kom from when she as a young woman encounters a renowned coach in a boxing gym and shares her boxing aspirations with him turns out successful in convincing him to teach her and how despite her father’s disapproval, she follows her passion and earned pride for our nation, India.

Paan Singh Tomar

 

Released in 2012, Paan Singh Tomar was directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, starring the late Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead roles. The film revolves around the life of Paan Singh Tomar, an athlete who won gold medals at the Indian National Games seven times in a row but was forced to take up the life of a dacoit when his mother was murdered and the police do not take any action.
