Hampshire Women produced a confident batting performance to chase down 250 against The Blaze Women with seven wickets in hand and 61 balls remaining in their ECB Women’s One-Day Cup encounter in Southampton. The chase was set up by an outstanding century from Maia Bouchier, while Abi Norgrove and Ella McCaughan provided valuable support at different stages. The Blaze, despite posting a competitive 249 for seven after being asked to bat, struggled to contain Hampshire once the visitors found their rhythm.
The Blaze’s innings began with an early setback when Sarah Bryce was dismissed for just three from 10 balls, caught by Ella McCaughan off Bex Tyson in the third over. The early wicket brought Tammy Beaumont to the crease, and she settled in alongside Kathryn Bryce to rebuild the innings. Beaumont played the anchor role impressively, eventually making 56 from 76 deliveries, including six fours and no sixes. Kathryn Bryce also contributed a patient 36 from 55 balls, with four boundaries. Their partnership became the backbone of The Blaze’s recovery, taking the score from 5 for one to 95 before Bryce was dismissed by Amanda-Jade Wellington in the 20th over.
Wellington finished with 0 for 51 from her 10 overs, while Tyson was one of the most effective bowlers for The Blaze, eventually claiming three wickets. Georgia Elwiss then joined Beaumont but could add only 12 from 17 balls before she was caught by Tullach off Poppy Tulloch. The Blaze slipped to 114 for three, putting pressure on the middle order. Beaumont was the next to depart at 132, caught by Tulloch off Tyson after scoring her half-century. Orla Prendergast attempted to maintain the momentum, scoring 16 from 21 balls with two fours, but her dismissal at 139 for five, again caught by Kemp off Tyson, left The Blaze needing a strong finish.
Emma Jones and Kirstie Gordon responded with an important partnership. Jones struck 26 from 34 balls, while Gordon produced a valuable 37 from 49 deliveries, hitting three fours. Jones was dismissed by Tulloch at 198, before Gordon followed at 213, caught by Tulloch off Daisy Gibb. Gibb’s spell was economical and disciplined, as she finished with one wicket for 44 runs from her 10 overs. Tyson completed her excellent spell with three wickets for 40 runs in 10 overs, while Tulloch claimed two for 29 from seven. Naomi Dattani went wicketless for 56 from 10 overs, Wellington conceded 51, and Eliza Bristow bowled three overs for 22. Despite those efforts, The Blaze’s lower order gave them a late boost.
Lucy Higham remained unbeaten on 34 from just 27 balls, striking four boundaries, while Josie Groves added seven from 12. Their late contribution, along with 22 extras, helped The Blaze reach 249 for seven from their allotted 50 overs.
Hampshire’s reply began positively but was not without a setback. Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier put together the first major partnership of the chase, taking Hampshire from the early stages to 98 before McCaughan was dismissed in the 20th over. McCaughan scored a composed 40 from 62 balls, hitting four fours, and gave Bouchier the platform to take control. Bouchier then shifted through the gears, combining placement with powerful strokeplay as she built a match-defining innings. Abi Norgrove joined her and the pair added another 116 runs, taking Hampshire to 214 before Norgrove fell in the 37th over.
Norgrove’s 52 came from 51 deliveries and included six fours, giving Hampshire exactly the support Bouchier needed. Bouchier continued her remarkable innings beyond three figures, eventually scoring 118 from 107 balls, with 16 fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 110.28. Her dismissal came at 229 for three in the 38th over, but by then Hampshire were firmly in control. Freya Kemp arrived and immediately accelerated the chase, smashing an unbeaten 20 from only eight balls, including two fours and a six. Rhianna Southby remained with her on 10 not out from 11 balls, and the pair calmly completed the chase at 250 for three after 39.5 overs.
The final unbeaten partnership of 21 runs ensured Hampshire reached the target with 61 deliveries still unused. The Hampshire bowling attack had earlier kept The Blaze from running away with the game. Cassidy McCarthy was particularly economical, taking one wicket for only 24 runs from 7.5 overs, while Grace Ballinger claimed one wicket but conceded 70 from her nine overs. Kirstie Gordon bowled nine overs for 46 without taking a wicket, and Kathryn Bryce returned figures of 0 for 46 from six overs. Josie Groves picked up one wicket for 31 from five overs, while Lucy Higham bowled three overs for 28.
The result was built around Hampshire’s superior batting partnerships. McCaughan and Bouchier added 98 for the opening wicket, Bouchier and Norgrove followed with a crucial 116-run stand, and Bouchier’s dismissal was immediately followed by an unbeaten 21-run partnership between Kemp and Southby. With Bouchier producing a superb century and Norgrove passing fifty, Hampshire Women turned a potentially challenging 250-run target into a comfortable seven-wicket victory.
