Fi Morris Stars with Six-Wicket Haul as Lancashire Women Thrash Essex Women by 153 Runs

Lancashire Women produced a commanding all-round performance at Stanley Park, Blackpool, to register a comprehensive 153-run victory over Essex Women in the 47th match of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026. After electing to bat first, Lancashire built their innings through a series of valuable partnerships and contributions throughout the batting order before their bowlers dismantled the Essex batting lineup in a one-sided contest.

The innings did not begin entirely smoothly for Lancashire as Emma Lamb looked positive during her stay at the crease. She struck 35 from 42 deliveries with four boundaries and shared the opening stand with Eve Jones. However, Essex struck first when Lamb was trapped by Esmae MacGregor at 67/1 in the 13th over. The breakthrough gave Essex some encouragement, but Lancashire continued to find useful contributions from their experienced top order.

Eve Jones anchored the innings beautifully and held one end together during the middle phase. The left-hander compiled a patient 54 from 78 balls, hitting five boundaries while negotiating a testing spell from Essex’s bowlers. Alongside Katie Mack, she helped Lancashire rebuild after the first wicket. Mack contributed 15 from 29 balls before being run out, ending a partnership that had steadied the innings at 97/2 after 21.3 overs.

Lancashire’s innings gathered momentum through a productive third wicket stand between Jones and Tilly Kesteven. Kesteven played positively, scoring 32 from 33 deliveries with four boundaries at a strike rate close to 97. Their partnership helped Lancashire move beyond 150 before Jones departed for a well-crafted half-century at 172/4 in the 32.5th over. Despite losing her set batter, Lancashire maintained control thanks to the depth in their batting lineup.

Captain Eleanor Threlkeld contributed a useful 21 from 23 balls and added valuable runs in the middle order. Kesteven’s dismissal at 152/3 had briefly slowed Lancashire’s progress, but Threlkeld and Seren Smale ensured the innings remained on track. Smale then played one of the most impactful innings of the match, scoring a fluent 38 from just 36 balls with four boundaries. Her partnership with Fi Morris proved particularly important as Lancashire accelerated during the latter stages of the innings.

Morris chipped in with a brisk 23 from 25 deliveries, while Smale’s aggressive approach pushed Essex onto the back foot. The sixth-wicket partnership carried Lancashire beyond 230 before Morris departed at 236/6. Smale continued to attack before falling for 38 at 256/7 in the 46th over. Kate Cross then provided the finishing touches with a 24 from only 21 balls, striking three boundaries at a strike rate of 114.28. Hannah Jones remained unbeaten on 5, while Vinai Weerappuli added a run as Lancashire closed on 272/9 from their 50 overs. The innings was boosted by 23 extras, including 18 wides.

For Essex Women, Esmae MacGregor was the standout bowler, claiming 3/44 from her nine overs. Eva Gray picked up 2/47 from eight overs, while Bryony Gillgrass and Joanne Gardner took one wicket apiece. Anneke Bosch bowled economically, finishing with figures of 1/45 from her full allocation of 10 overs. Sophie Munro also contributed with 1/32, but Essex struggled to consistently contain Lancashire’s batting depth and late-order acceleration.

Chasing 273 for victory, Essex endured a disastrous start. Tara Norris struck immediately, removing Alice Macleod without a run on the board and then accounting for opener Ariana Dowse for 5. Essex found themselves reeling at 13/2 inside the opening eight overs. Bryony Gillgrass attempted to counterattack with 7 runs, but Kate Cross removed her to leave Essex under immense pressure at 26/3.

Anneke Bosch and Joanne Gardner briefly repaired the innings. Bosch top-scored with 32 from 37 balls, striking five boundaries, while Gardner battled for 10 from 33 deliveries. Their resistance helped Essex reach 61 before Bosch became Fi Morris’ first victim. The wickets continued to tumble as Lancashire’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure.

Liberty Heap made 12 from 22 balls and shared a short partnership with Sophie Munro, who fought hard for an unbeaten 25 from 48 deliveries. Essex captain Eva Gray managed 12 from 20 balls, but neither batter could produce the substantial innings required to mount a serious chase. Morris ripped through the middle and lower order, dismissing Gardner, Heap, Gray, Esmae MacGregor and Clara Thaker to complete a magnificent six-wicket haul.

Essex eventually folded for 119 in 35 overs, falling well short of the target. Apart from Bosch’s 32 and Munro’s unbeaten 25, no batter managed to make a significant impact against Lancashire’s disciplined attack.

The Lancashire bowling unit delivered a collective masterclass. Fi Morris was the star performer with remarkable figures of 6/27 from 10 overs, including a maiden, as she dismantled the Essex middle order. Kate Cross supported brilliantly with 2/24 from six overs, while Tara Norris set the tone with 1/24 from five overs. Hannah Jones bowled tightly for 0/20 from eight overs, and Vinai Weerappuli also chipped in with 0/18 from six overs.
