The innings began on a cautious note for Essex, as the Hampshire bowling unit struck early to dent the top order. Grace Scrivens fell without troubling the scorers, dismissed by a sharp effort involving Maia Bouchier and Linsey Smith, making it 1–1 in just 1.6 overs. Cordelia Griffith tried to stabilise but was run out for 6 (15), leaving Essex at 2–21 in 5.3 overs. A crucial rebuilding phase followed as Alice Macleod and Jodi Grewcock stitched together a valuable partnership. Macleod compiled a steady 46 off 67 balls, striking 7 boundaries, while Grewcock anchored the innings brilliantly with a composed 80 from 97 deliveries, including 10 fours. Their stand carried Essex to 115 before Macleod’s run-out at 23.5 overs.

Grewcock continued to hold the innings together, forming smaller but vital partnerships with Florence Miller (12 off 19) and Amara Carr (33 off 44). However, regular breakthroughs from Hampshire kept Essex from fully accelerating. Joanne Gardner was trapped lbw by Bex Tyson for a duck, while Miller fell to a sharp catch by Francesca Sweet off Amanda-Jade Wellington. The middle-order contributions ensured Essex crossed into a competitive position, but wickets at regular intervals meant they couldn’t fully capitalise.

Sophia Smale’s quickfire 33 off just 29 balls at a strike rate of 113.79 provided late impetus, even as she became the eighth wicket to fall at 254 in 49.2 overs. Kate Coppack (17* off 17) and Eva Gray (9* off 3) added valuable late runs, pushing Essex to 265/8 in their 50 overs, with extras contributing 29 runs. Among the Hampshire bowlers, Linsey Smith stood out with 2/48 in her 10 overs, while Naomi Dattani (2/43) and Bex Tyson (1/41) chipped in effectively. Amanda-Jade Wellington’s control (1/48) and Francesca Sweet’s support role ensured consistent pressure.

Chasing 266, Hampshire began steadily but lost Maia Bouchier early for 7 (11), caught behind off the bowling of Kate Coppack at 20/1 in 4.4 overs. What followed was a defining partnership between Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove that turned the momentum. McCaughan played a magnificent innings of 90 from 110 balls, laced with 10 boundaries, while Norgrove supported brilliantly with 85 off 109 balls, including 7 fours. Their 147-run stand for the second wicket laid a strong foundation, taking Hampshire to 167 before McCaughan departed in the 35.1st over.

Even after Norgrove fell at 207/3 in 42.3 overs, Hampshire maintained composure. Freya Kemp’s dynamic 46 off 43 balls, striking at 106.97, ensured the chase stayed on track. Though Rhianna Southby was run out for 5, the calm presence of captain Naomi Dattani, who remained unbeaten on 25 off 18 balls, guided Hampshire through the tense closing moments. They reached 266/5 in 49.4 overs, sealing a thrilling five-wicket win with just two balls remaining.

Essex’s bowling effort was disciplined but lacked breakthroughs at key moments. Esmae MacGregor (1/31) and Eva Gray (1/47) picked up wickets, while Sophia Smale impressed with 1/45 in her full quota. Grace Scrivens also contributed with 1/62, but the lack of sustained pressure during partnerships proved costly.
