Hannah Darlington Stars on Return as Sydney Thunder Begin WBBL 12 with a Win

Hannah Darlington’s return to the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12 was always going to be emotional, but the 24-year-old Sydney Thunder allrounder made it emphatic at the Junction Oval on Thursday, claiming 2 for 29 from four overs in Thunder’s six-wicket season-opening win over the Melbourne Renegades. Less than a year after becoming the first cricketer to undergo an osteotomy, major surgery that involved breaking and realigning her leg, Darlington dismissed Courtney Webb and Hayley Matthews to announce that her long road back had truly ended.

Phoebe Litchfield won the toss and asked Sophie Molineux’s Renegades to bat first, a call that immediately brought Darlington into the contest. Her very first delivery found Matthews’ edge, only for Laura Harris to put down a sharp chance at cover. The near-miss did not rattle her. On her eighth delivery, Darlington had opener Webb caught behind for 22 off 24 balls, becoming the first wicket-taker of WBBL 12.

The bigger moment arrived after the drinks break. Matthews, who had looked dangerous on 45 from 30 deliveries, fell to Darlington’s first ball after the interval, a breakthrough that checked the Renegades’ momentum at a crucial stage. Darlington finished with figures of 4-0-29-2, a return that felt especially meaningful given how uncertain her cricketing future had appeared only months earlier.

“A bit of a relief to be back out in the lime green today; I’ve had this date pencilled in the calendar for a while,” Darlington told cricket.com.au after the win. “I was unsure it was going to happen for a little bit there, especially with the strength of this squad and having to get picked as well; that was in the forefront of the mind, but happy to be backed by this club and they’ve supported me the whole way, so it was nice to tick this one off.”

Darlington’s injury story is extraordinary even by the demanding standards of professional sport. She spent much of 2025 sidelined after hurting her knee while playing for Australia A against England A. Subsequent scans revealed a fracture at the top of her left tibia, and despite extended time off her feet, the injury showed no meaningful improvement through the second half of 2025 and into early 2026.

With her entire 2025-26 summer gone and no guarantee of a return, Darlington chose surgery in March. The osteotomy required surgeons to break her leg, remove a wedge of bone and insert a plate and screws to realign the limb and offload the unhealed fracture. “I basically had my leg broken, is the simple way to put it,” she explained. “The only way to fix it was to offload it, so hence the little bit of a break in the leg, then a big plate (inserted) to offset a little bit of an angle change, and then seven screws in the tibia.

Her recovery moved faster than expected. Rather than targeting a WNCL comeback, Darlington focused on T20 cricket and featured in one Spring Challenge match before Thursday’s WBBL opener. Thunder captain Litchfield believes the allrounder’s resilience has been as impressive as her skill. It’s been a really amazing process with the surgery, and it’s a cool story, so I’m really excited for her, and she’s playing some good cricket already, ahead of schedule,” Litchfield said last week. “It’s a credit to her, and the Thunder’s very lucky to have her.”

Darlington also used her time away from the field purposefully, working with Fox Cricket as an analyst and boundary rider while leading the design of Cricket NSW’s new First Nations motif, Mirrung. Unveiled on Thursday, the design will appear on the sleeve of all Cricket NSW playing shirts, including Thunder and Sixers.

“For me, it was all about representing belonging, so that players across all our teams could feel that connection to Country, First Nations communities across NSW and the game itself,” she said.

Thunder will now look to build on their winning start when they face Georgia Redmayne’s Brisbane Heat at Drummoyne Oval on 1 November, with the match beginning at 10:10 AM IST. For Darlington, though, the most important milestone has already been reached: she is back, bowling with purpose, and taking wickets that matter.
