Tahlia McGrath Targets Australia T20I Recall Through Strong WBBL 12 Campaign

Adelaide Strikers skipper and Australian vice-captain Tahlia McGrath is treating the 12th edition of the Women’s Big Bash League as more than a domestic campaign; it is her launchpad for a return to Australia’s T20I side.

The 30-year-old all-rounder, who last played a T20I on 23rd March 2026 against the West Indies at Kingstown before featuring against New Zealand, believes a strong WBBL 12 can restore her place in one of world cricket’s most competitive squads. The tournament runs from 29th October to 5th December 2026, with the inaugural ICC Women’s T20 Champions Trophy in India from 14th to 28th February 2027 offering an even bigger incentive for players on the selection radar.

McGrath’s recent international journey has been a study in patience. Once the No.1-ranked T20I batter in 2022 and widely viewed as a future Australian captain, she found herself on the periphery during Australia’s World Cup triumph in England after a difficult run of form. She has featured in only four of Australia’s 17 T20Is since March 2025, yet her outlook remains refreshingly pragmatic.

“The Australian team is such an awesome team with so many amazing cricketers within the team that are knocking on the door, so it’s a really hard squad to make,” McGrath told AAP. “And once you’re in, you’ve got to keep performing to stay in it. So that’s the beauty of Australian cricket, and why we’re so strong with the amount of depth and talent that we have.”

For Tahlia McGrath, the WBBL offers exactly what she needs: volume, visibility and pressure. “It’s a good problem when I’m not getting a hit, and the team’s doing really well,” she said. “I’m just chipping away at my game in the background, trying to stay ready. The Big Bash is a perfect way to press my claims. Plenty of cricket, 10 games, get a good run at it and, yeah, lots of opportunity there.”

Her credentials in the competition are substantial. McGrath made her WBBL debut for the Adelaide Strikers on 13th December 2015 against the Hobart Hurricanes at Launceston and has since become the franchise’s leading run-scorer with 2,447 runs at a strike rate of 106.71 and an average of 21.65 in 140 innings, including eight half-centuries across 148 matches. Her finest innings came on 18th November 2022 against the Hurricanes at North Sydney Oval, when her unbeaten 93 from 51 balls, laced with 12 fours and four sixes, chased down 155 with eight wickets in hand.

Her most productive batting season arrived in WBBL|07 in 2021, when she made 338 runs at an average of 42.25 and a strike rate of 114.18 in 14 innings. Appointed Strikers captain in 2021, she then delivered the ultimate leadership prize: back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, making Adelaide only the third team to defend the WBBL crown. Across those two championship seasons, she contributed 548 runs in 29 innings.

With the ball, McGrath’s value is equally clear. Her 94 wickets at an average of 25.70 and an economy rate of 7.15 in 126 innings include a four-wicket haul, while her best returns, 14 wickets apiece, came in WBBL 05 in 2019 and WBBL 09 in 2023. The Strikers, however, need their captain at her commanding best. They finished sixth in WBBL 11 with nine points from 10 games, three wins, four defeats and three washouts, and will open WBBL 12 at home against the Melbourne Stars on Saturday. Having won titles in 2022 and 2023, and finished runners-up in 2019 and 2021, Adelaide’s standards remain high.

“We’ve probably missed the mark the last couple of years but have got that hunger back that we want to be there at finals time, and we’d love to be super competitive this year,” McGrath said. “The hard thing with this competition is you look at everyone’s squad list, and everyone looks incredibly strong on paper, so it’s about performing every game and not taking anyone lightly.”

For a player who has experienced both the summit and the sidelines, WBBL 12 is not merely about runs and wickets. It is about reminding Australia’s selectors that Tahlia McGrath’s best cricket may still be ahead of her.
