ICC Confirms Eight-Team Qualifier for Women’s Cricket at Los Angeles Olympics 2028

Women’s cricket is preparing for two major events in 2028, with the qualification path for the Los Angeles Olympics becoming clearer. The sport will return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1904. The women’s competition will feature six teams, and the event structure was announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in June. The latest calendar update explains how the remaining places may be decided.

The Olympic qualification period will begin in January and February 2028. Four teams have already earned places after the Women’s T20 World Cup earlier in 2026. Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain qualified as the highest-ranked eligible teams from their respective continents. Two places remain, with the host nation’s status and qualifying tournament expected to shape the final lineup.

The United States has a separate requirement because it is hosting the Games. In June, the ICC said the USA Women’s team must reach the top 15 in the T20I rankings at any time during the qualification period, from June 30 to December 31, 2026. The team is currently ranked 19th. Its host place is subject to meeting this ranking condition.

The ICC has changed how the fifth Olympic place will be decided if the USA does not meet that condition. Earlier, the spot would go to the highest-ranked non-qualified team from any continent, using rankings on March 1, 2027. The revised rule connects the place to the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, which will be held in India in February 2027. The ICC stated: “If the host (USA) does not meet the ranking criteria by 31 Dec 2026, that spot is reallocated based on the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 standings (cut-off 1 March 2027),” making tournament standings important to qualification.

The Olympic qualifying event will feature eight teams. It will include the seven highest-ranked teams that have not qualified automatically, along with the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier. The event is scheduled for January-February 2028, but its venue has not been confirmed. These teams will compete for the remaining Olympic places.

Women’s cricket will have another major competition later in 2028. The Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in Pakistan from September 7 to October 1, 2028. It will feature 12 teams. The dates place the World Cup after Olympic qualification, giving teams another major event during the same year.

The Women’s Champions Trophy in India in February 2027 will help decide the fifth Olympic place if the USA fails to meet the host ranking requirement. The Olympic qualifier is planned for January-February 2028, although its venue has not been confirmed. Pakistan will then host the 12-team Women’s T20 World Cup from September 7 to October 1, 2028.

With cricket returning to the Olympics and the Women’s T20 World Cup also scheduled for 2028, the coming period will be important for teams seeking qualification. The USA must meet the ranking condition by December 31, 2026. The Champions Trophy result will matter if it does not, while the remaining places will be contested through the scheduled eight-team event.

The six-team Olympic format was announced in June. The ranking window gives the USA time to meet the host requirement, and the revised fallback means the Champions Trophy result will matter if it does not. The remaining places will be contested through the scheduled eight-team event for the final Olympic spots.
