Fans Celebrate Chamari Athapaththu’s Redemption Story After Historic World Cup Hundred

Just two days after being skittled for 98 by West Indies, Sri Lanka Women returned to Bristol with a point to prove. By the end of the evening, Chamari Athapaththu had turned redemption into destruction. The Sri Lanka captain produced a breathtaking unbeaten 106*(61) as her side crushed Ireland by nine wickets, chasing down 131 with 27 balls to spare. If Sri Lanka’s batting against the West Indies had raised questions, Athapaththu answered every one of them herself.

Ireland’s innings never truly got moving despite a valiant effort from captain Gaby Lewis. The Irish skipper fought her way to 59(50), holding the innings together after Amy Hunter was run out for a duck and Orla Prendergast fell for 0(6), leaving Ireland in early trouble at 3/2. Lewis rebuilt alongside Leah Paul (20) before Alice Tector added a useful unbeaten 28*(21) at the death. But Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept chipping away. Mithali Ayodhya impressed with 1/18, Sugandika Kumari picked up 1/26, Nilakshika Silva claimed 1/12, and Athapaththu even joined the act with 1/23 as Ireland finished on 130/5.

The total felt competitive but Athapaththu made it look tiny. From the moment she walked out to bat, the Sri Lankan captain played as though she had somewhere else to be. Boundaries flowed to every corner of the ground as Ireland’s bowlers searched desperately for answers. She raced to 50 in just 30 balls and powered Sri Lanka to 55 without loss in the powerplay, virtually ending the contest before it had properly begun. Imesha Dulani played the perfect supporting role with 20(27), but this was Athapaththu’s show. Every over brought another boundary, another roar from the crowd and another reminder of why she remains one of the most dangerous batters in world cricket.

The opening pair added 98 runs before Dulani finally departed, but Ireland’s brief celebration did little to slow the inevitable. Athapaththu continued her assault, moving through the nineties without hesitation before reaching a magnificent century from just 58 deliveries. Her knock included 17 fours and 2 sixes. By the time Nilakshika Silva joined her at the crease, the chase had become a procession. Sri Lanka crossed the finish line in just 15.3 overs, with Athapaththu still standing unbeaten at the other end.

What made the knock even more significant was the personal backdrop. Athapaththu had recently spoken about her leadership, even describing herself as a “failed captain” amid Sri Lanka’s inconsistent campaign. Against Ireland, she delivered the perfect answer with her bat. An unbeaten 106*(61), a Player of the Match performance, and one of the most dominant chases of the tournament — it was leadership in its purest form. When Sri Lanka needed a statement, their captain provided one, leading from the front and reminding everyone why she remains the heartbeat of this team.
