Ashleigh Gardner Joins Elite 1500 T20I Runs Club as Australia Crush Netherlands

All-rounder Ashleigh Gardner became the fifth Australian, after Beth Mooney, Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry, to surpass 1,500 T20I runs when she surged past the mark during Australia’s 3rd match in their campaign and the 14th match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at The Rose Bowl, Southampton.

Coming into the game 16 runs shy of the milestone, the vice-captain produced a counter-attacking 58 off 32 balls to take her career T20I tally to 1,542, helping Australia post 219/6 and then defend 220 to beat the Netherlands by 98 runs.

After missing the previous match against Bangladesh through injury, Gardner returned at number four in a potent Australian line-up. With Netherlands skipper Babette de Leede opting to field, Gardner stitched a brisk partnership and accelerated when required, reaching her maiden T20 World Cup fifty. Her 58 included eight boundaries and a maximum, and it was the sort of innings that married intent with control, clearing the short boundary and rotating the strike to maintain momentum. Australia’s 219/6 was the highest total for them and the joint highest in the history of the tournament so far, setting an imposing target in Southampton.

Ashleigh Gardner’s contribution was not limited to the bat. She chipped in with economical bowling figures of 2–0–18–0, offering tidy overs. Australia’s bowlers, backed by disciplined fielding, then restricted the Netherlands to 121/3 while defending the 220-run target, sealing a comfortable 98-run victory and a third straight win in their campaign. Beth Mooney earned the Player of the Match honours.

Gardner’s landmark is significant in context. Since her T20I debut against New Zealand in Melbourne on 17 February 2017, she has amassed 1,542 runs from 80 innings in 102 matches at a strike rate of 128.28 and an average of 24.87, including eight fifties. Her power-hitting and ability to score quickly have been hallmarks of her white-ball game; her career-best T20I score remains 93 off 57 balls against India at Melbourne on 8 February 2020, an innings that featured 11 fours and three sixes and won her the Player of the Match even as Australia fell short.

This is Gardner’s fifth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup appearance, having debuted in the tournament in 2018. Across five editions, she has accumulated 370 runs in 22 innings at a strike rate of 116.71 and an average of 21.76, including one unbeaten fifty in 25 World Cup matches. Her evolution from a powerful lower-middle-order hitter to a reliable top-four batter and vice-captain reflects both improved shot selection and expanded responsibilities within a star-studded Australian unit.

Australia is currently topping the points table, 6 points from 3 games, with comprehensive wins over South Africa (by 65 runs) and Bangladesh (by nine wickets), alongside the latest triumph against the Netherlands. Gardner’s milestone adds another layer to a campaign that balances individual landmarks with team dominance. Her 1,500-plus runs place her among the contemporary greats of Australia’s T20 arsenal, and her versatility with bat and ball makes her a continued match-winner as the tournament moves deeper into the group stage.
