Nat Sciver-Brunt, Heather Knight Steady England Women to Four-Wicket Win Over Ireland

We’re into the 2nd week as the action continues in this blockbuster 10th edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup hosted by England and Wales from 12th June to 5th July 2026. The hosts, England, led by skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, were up against Ireland, led by skipper Gaby Lewis, at the Rose Bowl in Southampton in the 8th match of the tournament on 16th June 2026, the 2nd game of the double-header day.

Earlier in the day, Chamari Athapaththu’s Sri Lanka registered a memorable win by 5 wickets against the defending champions, White Ferns, led by skipper Amelia Kerr at the same venue in Southampton.

England retained the same side that took the field in the previous clash against Sri Lanka. Ireland, on the other hand, made a precautionary change, resting Ava Canning, providing an opportunity for Louise Little.

England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and opted to bowl first at Southampton. Another top-order failure for Ireland, including a golden duck for skipper Gaby Lewis, landed them in early trouble, reducing them to 25/3 inside the powerplay that yielded 38 runs.

Rebecca Stokell joined Orla Prendergast (26 off 18 balls) at the crease, and the duo stitched a much-needed 28-run partnership for the 4th wicket, which also took them past the 50-run mark. Another decent partnership of 21 runs between Alice Tector and Leah Paul for the 6th wicket took them closer to the 100-run mark. However, the late-order fireworks from Louise Little (26* off 15 balls) not only helped them bat out the overs but also provided the respectability to their total as they ended with 118/9 in their quota of 20 overs.

Sophie Ecclestone (4-0-22-3), Charlotte Dean (4-1-11-2), Danielle Gibson (2-0-10-2), and Linsey Smith (4-0-20-1) were the standout performers with the ball for England. Lauren Bell (4-0-39-1) played her part with the ball.

Chasing a target of 119, the English openers Danielle Wyatt-Hodge and wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones got their side off to a cautious start with a 27-run opening stand. The left-arm spinner Aimee Maguire brought Ireland roaring back into the contest by dismissing both the set openers, Amy Jones (9 off 10 balls) and Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (16 off 16 balls) in the 5th over of the run chase. By the end of the powerplay, the hosts were reduced to 35/3.

One of the most experienced pairs in the English unit, skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt and former skipper Heather Knight, joined hands at the crease and bailed their side out of trouble with a crucial 64-run partnership, their 2nd highest for the 4th wicket in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, to take them to a comfortable position in the run chase.

Orla Prendergast broke the stand, by sending Heather Knight (26 off 23 balls) back to the pavilion to provide a much-needed 4th breakthrough for her side in the 14th over of the run chase. It was just the beginning of things to come as a well-set skipper, Nat Sciver-Brunt (48 off 37 balls) pulled off a surprising move, retiring herself out in the 16th over of the innings, which she eventually revealed for a precautionary measure for experiencing tightness in her calf. She became the first player in history to pull off such a move in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup clash.

England eventually managed to tumble over the line in the 18th over of the run chase, sealing the game with just 4 wickets in hand. Orla Prendergast (4-0-17-2) and Aimee Maguire (4-0-23-2) were the top performers with the ball for Ireland. The English Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, on the cusp of an iconic landmark, delivered a decisive spell, leaving a significant impact on the game, earning her the Player of the Match as England registered back-to-back victories to kickstart their home T20 World Cup campaign.
