Shabnim Ismail is one of the fastest bowlers in women’s cricket history. She is famous for her speed, attacking bowling, and taking wickets in big matches. For many years, she led South Africa’s bowling attack and became one of the top bowlers in world cricket.
She made her international debut for South Africa in 2007 and soon became known for her fast bowling. Over the years, she became South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in women’s cricket and helped the team become one of the strongest teams in the world. Though she retired from international cricket after South Africa’s home 2023 T20 World Cup, she has returned for the 2026 edition.
Notably, during the Women’s Premier League in 2024, she bowled the fastest ball in women’s cricket history at more than 132 km/h. Her speed and aggressive style made her difficult to face batters around the world.

Shabnim Ismail made her T20I debut for South Africa against New Zealand in August 2007. She later became one of the top fast bowlers in Women’s T20 Internationals.
She played 113 T20I matches and has taken 123 wickets at an average of 18.62. Her best bowling figures in T20Is are 5 wickets for 12 runs. She was also the first South African bowler to complete 100 wickets in Women’s T20 Internationals.
Shabnim played in every ICC Women’s T20 World Cup from 2009 to 2023. She played an important role in helping South Africa reach the final of the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Her bowling partnership with Marizanne Kapp was seen as one of the best fast-bowling pairs in women’s cricket.
Shabnim Ismail’s T20 Career
Shabnim has also had a very successful T20 franchise career around the world. She has played in tournaments like the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), The Hundred, and Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL).
In the WBBL, she took 73 wickets in 80 matches and became known for her tight bowling and match-winning spells. She also helped Sydney Thunder win the WBBL title and won the Player of the Final award after her excellent bowling in the final.
In the WCPL, she took 16 wickets in only 9 matches for Guyana Amazon Warriors Women.
Recent Form Ahead of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
Shabnim Ismail announced her retirement from international cricket in 2023 but is now returning to the South Africa team for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Her return gives South Africa a big boost because of her experience and fast bowling.
She has continued to perform well in franchise cricket and domestic matches. In the Women’s Premier League 2026, she played for Mumbai Indians Women and took important wickets.
