Sophie Luff’s Classy 57 Leads Somerset Women to 39-Run Win Over Yorkshire

A lively evening at Taunton witnessed an entertaining contest in the Women’s T20 Blast 2026 competition as Somerset Women showcased composure with both bat and ball to outclass Yorkshire Women by 39 runs in a well-rounded performance. After Yorkshire Women opted to bowl first at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Somerset’s batting unit stitched together impactful partnerships at crucial phases before their bowlers tightened the screws in the chase to secure an important victory.

Somerset Women’s innings did not begin entirely without hiccups, but there was enough fluency at the top to establish momentum. Rebecca Odgers looked positive from the outset, striking 30 off 25 deliveries, including five boundaries, while ensuring the scoreboard moved at a healthy pace. She combined with Sophie Luff to lay the initial foundation, as Somerset negotiated the new-ball spell carefully against Yorkshire’s disciplined bowling attack. However, Yorkshire found the breakthrough when Beth Langston trapped Odgers lbw, ending the opening stand at 68 runs in 7.3 overs, giving Yorkshire Women an opening into the innings.

If Yorkshire sensed an opportunity, Somerset skipper Sophie Luff had other plans. Displaying authority and timing, Luff produced a commanding knock of 57 from just 35 balls, peppered with eight fours and one six, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 162.85. Her innings became the cornerstone of Somerset’s batting effort. Alongside Anika Learoyd, who contributed a brisk 35 off 28 balls, the pair built a valuable 42-run partnership for the second wicket that kept Yorkshire under pressure. Learoyd rotated strike smartly and found boundaries at regular intervals before falling in the 17th over, caught by Sterre Kalis off the bowling of Maddie Ward, leaving Somerset at 139/3.

Even after losing set batters, Somerset ensured there was no collapse. Niamh Holland played a composed finishing role, remaining unbeaten on 41 off 27 deliveries, striking five boundaries and accelerating when needed. Her calmness in the latter stages proved crucial. A brief stand with Alex Griffiths added useful runs before Griffiths was run out for 4, while Chloe Skelton’s quick cameo of 3 off 2 balls also ended via a run-out. Somerset eventually completed their 20 overs at 177/5, with late momentum ensuring Yorkshire faced a challenging target.

Yorkshire Women’s bowling effort had moments of discipline despite the scoreboard pressure. Beth Langston emerged as the standout performer, delivering a tidy spell of 1/23 from four overs at an economy of 5.75, including the key wicket of Odgers. Maddie Ward also chipped in with 1/27 in four overs, while experienced spinner Jess Jonassen claimed 1/33 despite facing aggressive batting. Ines Blackwell remained economical with 0/37, whereas Holly Garton and Jessica Woolston proved expensive in patches as Somerset’s batters capitalised during the death overs.

Chasing 178, Yorkshire Women endured an early setback almost immediately. Captain Lauren Winfield-Hill managed 11 from 11 balls, but Somerset struck hard when Erin Thomas departed for a duck after just three deliveries, bowled by Alex Griffiths, leaving Yorkshire reeling at 1/1 in the opening over. Though Winfield-Hill and Jess Jonassen attempted to rebuild, Yorkshire kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jonassen briefly counterattacked with 17 off 9 balls, striking at 188.88, but Erin Vukusic removed her, reducing Yorkshire to 29/3.

The visitors found hope through a crucial resistance from Sterre Kalis, who played Yorkshire’s best innings of the match. Kalis anchored the chase beautifully with 51 off 35 balls, smashing nine boundaries and keeping the required run rate alive. She stitched together a useful partnership with Maddie Ward, who added an energetic 22 from 16 balls, including three fours. Their stand brought Yorkshire back into contention, but Somerset once again wrestled back momentum. Lola Harris delivered a decisive spell, dismissing both Maddie Ward and Ines Blackwell, while Kalis’ dismissal at 104/5 in 12.5 overs significantly dented Yorkshire’s hopes.

Lower down the order, Beth Langston remained unbeaten on 17, but support around her faded. Ria Fackrell struggled for fluency with 3 off 7, Holly Garton managed 8 off 15, and Jessica Woolston was left unbeaten on 1 as Yorkshire concluded at 138/9 from 20 overs, falling short by 39 runs. Somerset Women’s bowling attack worked collectively and intelligently throughout the chase.

Lola Harris starred with the ball, claiming 3/17 in four overs while maintaining an excellent economy of 4.25, making crucial breakthroughs during the middle overs. Alex Griffiths set the tone with 1/25, while Chloe Skelton endured a costly outing despite taking a wicket, returning 1/35. Olivia Barnes delivered an excellent spell of 1/19 from four overs, tightening the pressure, and Erin Vukusic chipped in with 1/7 in three overs. Niamh Holland also contributed effectively with 1/23, ensuring Yorkshire never truly settled.
