Vishmi Gunarathne Dropped from Sri Lanka Women’s Bangladesh Tour Squad

In a bold step into uncharted territory, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu will lead her dynamic women’s squad on a groundbreaking tour of Bangladesh, headlined by a three-match ODI series followed by three T20Is from April 20 to May 2, 2026.

This white-ball showdown against Nigar Sultana Joty’s hosts marks only the second bilateral ODI and T20I series between the sides, and the first on Bangladeshi soil.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Panel has handpicked balanced squads blending firepower, spin wizardry, and emerging talent to conquer the challenges of Rajshahi’s ODI venues (April 20, 22, and 25) and Sylhet’s T20I battlegrounds (April 28, 30, and May 2). Athapaththu, the explosive allrounder, captains both lineups, anchoring a core that promises high-octane cricket.

The promising former Sri Lankan under-19 skipper, Vishmi Gunarathne, being overlooked for both the white-ball formats (ODIs and T20Is), is one of the biggest absentees for the upcoming bilateral series for the visitors. The last time Sri Lanka were up against Bangladesh in a bilateral series, it was in May 2023. As far as the ODIs are concerned, they last met each other in April 2023.

Standouts like Harshitha Samarawickrama, with her elegant strokeplay, add reliability, and Nilakshi Silva, the middle-order enforcer, provides batting depth across both formats. Spin duo Kaveesha Dilhari and Sugandika Kumari headline a potent attack, while pacers like Malki Madara and Rashmika Sewwandi add variety. ODI-exclusive picks Piumi Wathsala, Kawya Kavindi, and Chethana Vimukthi bolster the longer format, signalling selectors’ intent to exploit subcontinental conditions.

This tour isn’t just about another series; it’s a litmus test for Sri Lanka’s resurgence post their mixed 2025 campaigns. Athapaththu’s leadership has galvanised the side, evident in their fearless approach during recent stints. Facing Bangladesh, who boast home advantage and spinners like Rabeya Khan and Fahima Khatun, will demand adaptability. Expect nail-biters under Sylhet’s lights and tactical ODIs in Rajshahi’s heat.
