Georgia Voll Opens Up on Filling Alyssa Healy’s Shoes and Tags Australia Underdogs at T20 World Cup 2026

Australia’s preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 have been strengthened by both a dominant series sweep over West Indies and the emergence of a new star in Georgia Voll, who is rapidly cementing her place at the top of the order.

The 22-year-old has stepped into the spotlight following the retirement of long-time wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, delivering performances that suggest Australia’s transition phase may be shorter than expected. Her standout moment came in the rain-affected third T20I against the West Indies in St Vincent, where she blasted a 53-ball 101 — her maiden century in the format. In doing so, she joined an elite list of Australians to achieve the feat, alongside Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney and Healy.

Her rise has been swift. Just days after her century, Voll climbed to No.1 in the ICC women’s T20I batting rankings, overtaking opening partner Mooney, a remarkable achievement just 14 months after making her debut in the format.

Reflecting on her recent success, Voll said, “Obviously I’m happy with the way that I’m hitting the ball at the moment … I bat my best when I’m not thinking too much, just watch the ball and react. That’s probably what happened the other night (in St. Vincent). I was obviously lucky enough for it to come off and be able to put a decent score on the board for the team.”

Despite her impressive numbers, averaging 39.50 at a strike rate exceeding 150, Voll remains focused on improving her game ahead of the World Cup in English conditions.

“There are always things that you can look to work on, or get better in different aspects of the game, and I think that’ll always be (the case) until I finish my career. There are little things that I’d love to look at heading into playing over in those English conditions, so I’ll obviously get stuck into that before we head over there.”

Australia enters the tournament in unfamiliar territory, no longer the defending champions after their semi-final exit at the 2024 edition. With the New Zealand women’s national cricket team claiming their maiden title, Australia’s aura of invincibility has been briefly disrupted. However, Voll believes that a shift in perception could work in the team’s favour.

“There’s hunger. This group’s obviously been super successful overall, but not holding either of those trophies, you could say we’re going in as underdogs. This group is in such a great state of mind and the way that we want to play our cricket, we’ve shown glimpses of that over the last little period. We’re very hungry to go over and get the job done.”

The Australian side has undergone a notable transition in recent years, with several high-profile departures including former captains Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning. Yet the next generation has stepped up, with Voll joined by rising talents such as Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland in reshaping the team’s core.

Voll has also developed a strong partnership with Mooney at the top of the order, with the duo forming one of the most productive opening combinations in women’s T20 internationals. Their contrasting styles and understanding have made them a formidable pair during the Powerplay. On the challenge of replacing Healy and the comparisons that come with it, Voll said, “Obviously Midge has been such a great player for a long period of time.

“To follow in her footsteps a little bit, I don’t try and think about it too much because it could be quite daunting. I just want to play my own way, and obviously that is quite similar to the way Midge played. I get compared to (Healy) a little bit, which obviously is pretty high praise, but I just try to keep things as simple as I can, and when I’m doing that is when I’ll perform at my best. I’m happy to take on that responsibility and just do the best I can for this team.”

Australia will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa on June 13 at Old Trafford, carrying renewed motivation and a refreshed lineup. With Voll leading the charge at the top, the team appears well-equipped to mount another serious title challenge.
