The most awaited and most important tri-series is scheduled to be held ahead of the World Cup from 31st January in Canberra involving 3 countries: India, England, and Australia.
It will be played in a double round-robin format. The Indian women’s team for the crucial tri-series in Australia and the probable for the subsequent T20 World Cup will be picked in Mumbai on Sunday i.e 12th January 2019.
This tournament will also help the sides to realize their most potential playing eleven options before the World Cup and give a clear picture of where the team stands. The Indian team will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur and they will be locking the horns against the defending champions Australia in the World Cup opener in Sydney.
“The tri-series will be an important one. It will tell us if the girls can compete against the very best (Australia and England). In all likelihood, the team that features in the tri-series will be the team that plays the T20 World Cup,” a BCCI official told PTI.
India hasn’t performed well in the T20 International cricket and has lately found their rhythm in the format. They faced a six-match losing streak in 2019 before it beat South Africa 3-1 at home in October and West Indies 5-0 in an away series. West Indies did not play their senior and important players in this series as most of them were out due to injuries. However, they have begun their pre-world-cup camps.
The performances of India A players during last month’s tour of Australia will also be taken into account before the Hemlata Kala-led selection panel announces the squad for the tri-series and probable for the T20 World Cup. The selectors will have to pick the final-15 one month before the mega event.
Fifteen-year-old Shafali Verma has already impressed the selectors and is a sure shot pick for the tri-series. The selectors will also keep an eye on another young talent, sixteen-year-old Richa Ghosh from Bengal who has done exceptionally well in the ongoing Senior Women’s T20 Challengers Trophy held at Cuttack.
Currently, there is not any Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) in place so the same set of selectors are likely to pick the T20 World Cup squad after naming the team for the tri-series on Sunday. Once the CAC is formed, it will pick the new selection panel.
