24-year-old Emily Smith who serves the role of wicket-keeper for Hobart Hurricanes was banned recently as she posted batting line up via her Instagram profile before the match was played, Australia Cricket Association has decided to offer her a paid internship during her ban phase, Union considers 12-month sanction ‘heavy-handed’.

The association met on Tuesday night to discuss the 12-month ban, of which nine months is suspended. They are looking forward to finding ways to treat this situation. This internship will keep her involved with the sport, her role will engage her in event management, program service delivery and forging links with past players.

The match was before which she posted the line up was eventually washed out and Smith said the post was designed as a joke to illustrate that she was again batting below a teammate. However, the post surpassed the disciplinary line and falls into anti-corruption rules, which do not allow players to disclose inside information to journalists or on social media websites.

The WBBL is a hotspot for overseas betting markets, hence the concern about Smith’s post. She accepted the sanction but the players’ association could push for it to be reconsideration by Cricket Australia as they argue over the heaviness of the ban. The Hurricanes were also fined $10,000 as she had her mobile phone at that moment which is out of the rules book.
