Bangladesh Women began their ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 campaign with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Pakistan Women in Colombo, successfully chasing a target of 130 with more than 18 overs to spare. Debutant Rubya Haider starred with a composed unbeaten 54, anchoring the chase after a disciplined bowling effort had earlier restricted Pakistan to 129 all out in 38.3 overs.

Pakistan’s decision to bat first quickly backfired as Bangladesh’s new-ball bowler Marufa Akter struck twice in her opening over, dismissing both openers for golden ducks and rattling the top order. Despite a brief recovery led by Rameen Shamim (23) and Muneeba Ali (17), Pakistan continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, with Shorna Akter’s incisive 3 for 5 helping Bangladesh run through the tail. Only Shamim (23) and captain Fatima Sana (22) offered any notable resistance as Pakistan struggled for momentum against a relentless Bangladesh attack.
Chasing a modest total, Bangladesh stumbled early, losing two wickets inside the first ten overs with just 23 runs on the board. The turning point came through a steady partnership between captain Nigar Sultana Joty and debutant Rubya Haider, whose calm presence helped rebuild the chase. While Nigar (23) provided early impetus, Rubya settled in and took charge after her captain’s dismissal, ensuring no late drama for Bangladesh.
Pakistan’s bowlers tried to make inroads and applied early pressure, but the low target left them with little margin for error. Bangladesh batted with patience, turning the game firmly in their favor once Rubya Haider found her rhythm. Sobhana Mostary (24* off 19) then joined Rubya (54* off 77) for the finishing touches, striking the winning boundary and sealing a clinical first win for Bangladesh in the tournament.
This result gives Bangladesh a positive start to their World Cup journey, while Pakistan will be left running their batting collapse. Captain Fatima Sana acknowledged the nerves and pressure of a World Cup opener and called on her side to regroup ahead of their upcoming fixture against hosts India. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will look to carry this momentum into their next match against England.
